What would you do?

Why would he leave something expensive and supposedly personally valuable in an area near drinks? Defies logic in my mind. Maybe its just me.

Lol

How dare he just leave around a laptop in his own house so it can be taken and used by his sister and friend while they have drinks near it. Totally his fault that the drink was spilt. A recipe for disaster from the start, he should have put the laptop in a plastic wallet/bomb bunker if he wanted it to be safe.

I can't believe you just reversed into my car, I don't want to go through insurance because my premium might increase by £30 but if you get it repaired on the cheap or replace it with a second hand one it won't be the same... please buy me a new £30,000 car.

You've offered the £500, they've rejected it. Take the offer away now and blame their drinking vessels for not being stable enough. If they take the £500, make sure you get the laptop (including hard drive) if they are going to be petty about it. If they want more cash your sister's friend should stump up the rest as it was probably her idea to use it in the first place.

If they can't find a similar model for £500 then £500 isn't appropriate.

Where are you pulling this value from? If you can't find a Laptop to replace it with, then she should pay the £800 to have the original repaired.

I agree with this tbh but if OP can find it for them, then job done.

If I offered £500 and their response was "No I want £1600 so I can buy a brand new model" I'd tell them to get stuffed and they would end up with £0...

Was just about to post this.

Did the glass fall out of a hand or was it knocked over?

If it was someone else's glass which they put down next to the laptop or if the laptop was moved next to the water someone should share the blame.

I always try to keep drinks away from anywhere they would cause damage if spilled.

I can't even believe these things are worth £500 still.

Apple, trolling hipsters since they were created.

Btw also op. There was some guy I remember who was an apple repair technician, he'd fix macs for a much cheaper price than apple themselves.

He had a youtube channel if I recall and Apple were trying to shut him down to stop him repairing their stuff for cheap.

Someone broke my laptop. One of my friends. He didnt have a job so I got nothing. If they have insurance they should just claim. accidents happen.

If I had money I might offer them some but at the moment I am skint so no one would get £500 off me. I wouldn't give them any money and let them use the insurance.

This is not a car accident. you wernt on the road. they have no legal case.

Well the sister and OP sister was using the laptop. As the words 'for some reason' has been used, i think we can assume without permission and it broke due to OP sis accident. At the moment the brother is out of pocket through no fault of his own. Doesn't matter about insurance because his folks clearly dont want to claim, is it fair to leave him out of pocket?

I would just buy the replacement and give it if you can get one for £500.

Here is an interesting question which i dont think has been asked:

What does your sister think of the situation OP?

I would have offered a reasonable amount for the insurance excess and a little for the trouble. I wouldn't offer a like for like replacement (£500 for an accident, that's what insurance is for).

It does suck, but accidents happen. It's not like it was malicious or the like.

Them asking for £1600 would just get me to tell them to do one. Money grabbers, seems like they want to profit off this.

I'm making an assumption here, but did the water come from her friends tap?

If it did, well then it was their water that broke the laptop so they should pay! :D

But on a serious note if they have insurance I would be offering to pay for the claim.

I'm not sure if her friend obtained permission from her brother, I would assume that she did.

Friend also feels partly responsible, and weirdly has offered to go halves on the cost of a new laptop... Which my sister isn't entertaining.

My sister has offered to go halves on the cost of replacement or repair.

They're demanding that it's 'resolved' by 31st December, otherwise it'll be classed a 'vintage' machine by Apple, and they won't repair it...

Apple won't repair this unit if it is a 15" 2011 MBP as it has recently been made a vintage model. There may be some old parts stock left but it will be extortionate. They won't even let us order parts for them as an authorised service provider.

I do know that insurance companies are currently replacing a lot of these with the new £2300 2016 MBP as the direct replacement (specs have to be the same or better and this causes this model to the replacement). At least the insurance companies we work on behalf of are. Tell them to claim on their insurance.

EDIT: didn't see the above. It's already deemed as vintage on Apples GSX system.

Is she legally obligated to pay anything towards it?

If not, I'd tell them to go do one if they declined the £500.

If the sisters friend is a true friend, she'd understand that her family are being unreasonable.

£1600 is she having a ****ing laugh, id buy a replacement of the exact model and maybe chuck a few quid extra on top of that for the inconvenience but legitimately asking for 1600 quid? christ that triggered me nearly as much as that old 4chan /g/ post about the dude whos sister keeps taking his thinkpad.

no joke though ship it out to louis rossmann that dude works ****ing wonders on ****ed macbooks

https://www.youtube.com/user/rossmanngroup

it could come in cheaper but thenagain it could cost more. if you're going to buy a replacement i'd atleast ask for the broken one to stick on ebay as the broken hardware market is still large and you could make a fair few quid assuming the screen/casing/etc is in good nick.

1600 quid what a joke
