If it was me, and I thought for one second he was gonna have a pop , I would smash em into the floor and sit on em, while I wait for the cops to deal with the little fool
Just kids messing around. They used to throw stones at cars where i grew up, especially if they saw fire trucks or police cars.
If ya think theyre gonna cause damage to someones car or cause a crash etc then just ring the police.
At 16 you would think they would have grown out of it tbh, im sure most of us were little ***** when we were kids but by 16 most of us have have grown up got a job etc.

Hard to say without being in heat of the situaion but most likely avoid a fight at all costs to be honest, unless they attack, of course, but even then you need to be pretty careful, especially against younger people. A mate once hurt somone pretty badly in an act of self-defense which was luckily caught on CCTV else he would have been in serious trouble. Even a single punch can do a lot of damage.
Is your friend handy in such situaions? Either way you're out numbered which is another reason to think twice.

Incredibly someone I know who "collects" has this tactic and says it works.

It does not indeed. I'd call the police, let them know some retards were throwing stuff at passing cars, doubt they'd do anything about it though.
There's a broken down old railway bridge, trees and moss growing on it, some days there are 10-12 year old morons throwing stones at every vehicle they see passing under it. I saw some pedestrians get hit with mud balls there, nobody seems to care.
If it does get physical in your case, make sure there are witnesses to confirm a self-defence.

Well...a fair few answers.
What happened in the end was I told the one in front of me who was within reach to take a step back or I'd smack him. He did. His mate to the right of me then obviously clocked that the one who was all mouth was just mouth and so backed off as well.
Told them that if I saw them anywhere near again I'd call the police but that I'd just consider this as them being morons. Mr Mouth got a bit lippy again but stayed away so I got on my bike and rode of to shouts of 'snitch' and 'pussy'.
I'm asking because before I told him to step back I came incredibly close to smacking him. Given the size difference between me and him it likely wouldn't have ended well for him. However, as has been said, the thought that went through my mind is that me flooring a 15-16 year old isn't going to look great and even if I can defend myself legally it would still be a long, painful and protracted experience.
It also could have gone very badly with me getting jumped by and having to TRY to sort all 3. Which may or may not have worked.
I think the situation probably resolved itself in the best way it could have, minus them all crying and promising they'll never do it again.

LOL. In absolute stitches imagining Dis86 rolling on his pushbike protecting his neighbourhood from apple wielding children. 
I don't see what the fuss is about when they didn't even throw anything at you. I would just mind my own business and walk right on by, cool as a cucumber, as local people would know not to fling things at me, especially 200m from my house, let alone apples which is just bizarre in it's own right. Learning to mind your own business is very important, but I can understand the inexperience when the most dangerous thing going on in your neighbourhood is a bunch of young chavs throwing apples at people.

Surely the GD way to deal with these apple throwing peasants is to teach them the finer arts of the trebuchet. Do it properly or not at all.
