Whats best to remove old Thermal Paste

What's in the TIM clean?

I bought a big ol bottle of iPA and it'll last forever. Does a great job. Don't forget you'll need some sort of lint-free cloth to clean it for best results. You can start with anything to get most of the gunk off, but for final finishing, it's best with a lint-free cloth and iPA. Very clean surface. In fact, I've sometimes cleaned CPUs and heatsinks with iPA and found traces of more than one TIM, where there were remnants from the previous application and it wasn't cleaned properly. It can take a little while to get it totally clean, but I'm convinced that it will help the temperatures and let the TIM work properly when it's applied.

IPA didn't work at all for me (MX-2)
Acetone (nail varnish remover) and IPA are both miscable with water, and great for glass cleaning. TIM clean seems to dissolve oily residue far better

Hey Guys,

Upgrading my CPU cooler and just wondering whats the best option to remove the paste, normally just used watered down white spirits but its been a while since I've done this.

Cheers

KaHn

Personally i use "ArctiClean Thermal Material Remover and Surface Purifier"
Really works nicely, removes all the gunk and leaves it sparkly clean with a nice zesty smell ^^
Its cheap as chips and gets the job done - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=TH-000-AC&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=27

You will if you work for the health service

No you wont, you simply cannot get 100% IPA, it might be labelled as such because it only has IPA in it, but it wont be 100%. The purest i've seen would be the greater than 99.9% HPLC grade from somewhere like sigma aldrich

Ive used surgical spirit before but just use nail varnish remover because it was closer to hand this time.

Have a little bottle of Acetone which I use along with a glasses cleaning cloth. Keep meaning to buy some IPA but the Acetone does the same job :)

I've been using IPA, found some on Ebay for like £5 with delivery included.

It's amazing stuff though... I've been using it to clean alsorts.

The Side of my Obsidian on the glass pannel, it's usually full of fingerprints... I cleaned it with that, it's absolutley imaculate.

It's got the greasy marks off the side of my TV. Not sure if your meant to use it on stuff like that, but, good god it works brilliantly.

also, you can use it to clean a clean looking CPU, and you get a nice silvery mark on the cloth your using where the oily stuff had been left behind.

isopropyl alcohol, kitchen tissues, elbow grease if that fail mr muscle does the job fine =D i just kid :P

It not illegal :D you can still buy it at hardware stores and electrical shops chemist just dont sell it at it purest form anymore :D
