the post in my area has gone noticeably downhill the last couple of months. things are being delivered a week or two after their expected date, no post for a few days then a bulk delivery.
sad to see such an historic institution being driven into the ground
I've had more stuff go missing this year out of a relatively small number of RM untracked items than I had when I was ordering a couple of DVD's a week from the US.
IIRC between 00-05 my "loss" rate for all my DVD orders, averaged about 0.5% (literally one a year lost out of 100-200 a year*) all the ones that got lost were international and thus travelling by ship or air through customs etc.
So far this year I'm down 2 BD's and a large book, all sent within the UK untracked via RM and the vast bulk of my discs and books are now sent tracked or via courier.
Actual post delivery time is varying daily between about 9am and 5pm, and the only stuff that is "reliably" arriving within a day or two of being posted is oddly enough the tracked stuff** which half the time is arriving via the neighbouring delivery office having not actually arrived there until lunch time (going by tracking information when it's available).
I'd be tempted to say that RM is falling apart in places, and I can make a very good guess that the reason is the staff cut backs, especially the experienced staff and changes like attempting to make things "more efficient" by using fewer trucks or sending them out later in the day or with less room for any traffic delays.
I was chatting very briefly with my "regular" postie (although regular seems to be 2-3 times a week these days), and he handed over a package that had a small "postage due" sticker commenting "it's not showing up on my scanner as being due, it keeps doing this, so here you go" (or words to that effect). I get the impression he's not happy with how things are going and wasn't willing to carry stuff back for that reason.
*The days of Play.com and DVDpacific, DVDSoon etc and a really good exchange rate, IIRC I was paying a tenner or less for a new release, and sometimes a fiver for something that was £30 over here.
**Which under the law and postal regulations is not meant to be given priority, it's the same as whatever class postage it's based on, unlike SD.
