Whats it like around Manchester?

ive lived in stockport for a few weeks. it was okay, apart from crammed with chavs, and the town was nothing to write home about. i never visited manchester though. we did travel past it on the train. and it looked quite daunting :p

yeah, they're all liberty living blocks i think, definitely the one between millow st and corp st is and the one between crown ln and corp st
from august my department is supplying broadband to those halls i'm pretty sure

Also this is the route I would have to travel on to get to the campus, loats of dual and tripple roads, any safer ways?

to be honest you'll be fine along there, upto the A665 label you'll be moving quicker than the cars and im not certain if there's bike lanes but there is plenty of room for cyclists

someone else may be able to clarify re:cycle lanes on ashton old rd, but i would say it was reasonably safe for cycling, although there may be a cycle path that cuts across

That forest bit on the corner there is a cycle path, I looked but I dont see the point of it since you end up back on the road all it does is slow you down.

Manchester is awesome :)

Admittedly im beyond student housing now and live in a nice new apartment near the section they call the Northern Quarter, but even then the city itself is just great!

Personally I don't like the very studenty areas as hang outs, though they are cheaper of course, when you're there i'd mix it up a bit and occasionally get yourself to the nice bars in the Northern Quarter (£3 a pint though) and Deansgate.

You get some really good bands gigging in the unions 3 venues (Academy 1/2/3) and the union itself is pretty good too.

I spent my student years in a place called Stafford near Stoke-On-Trent and feel safer out at night in most places than I ever did in Stafford. In fact my only "confrontations" have ever happened in stafford.

Sure there are loads of chavs about, but most of em are just "proper" mancunians ;) just look to Ian Brown for an example. Rough as hell, but most of em are fine people.

Manchester is no London, nor would I want it to be. Its a compact and reasonably small city with lots of heritage and history to explore, some good museums, enough nice bars and pubs to just be able to hang out for a whole day if you wish and so many clubs that if thats your scene you will nearly always have somewhere new to go for many many months. The fact its much cheaper on the whole than many major cities is nice too :) Lots of shopping as well of course.

Last year I lived in a 2 bed apartment that was brand new, v nice etc and was £750 a month. The housemate I had has just found a far smaller and less well equipped place in Epsom and hes going to be paying £1200 a month!

What department are you coming to at Manchester? Comp Sci or something else? If its comp sci, make sure you make the most of the fact we have a lot of people lecturing here who had a large hand in forming the subject area they teach (Steve Furber comes to mind).

I hope you enjoy the city as much as I do :)

cuts off quite a busy junction, so cant really see it slowing you down, but your other alternative is getting a bus but you'll be about a 10 min walk from the right bus stop at your flat end

I'm doing comp sys support and manchester college (MANCAT), my main worry is finding a job and making friends really, would hate to be in a large city and not know anyone, I'm not really into clubbing, well I havent really done it lol, most days off If I will not be doing work I plan on going out of the city into the hills for cycling or going to that velodrome.

The main worry about the accommodation that I am currently looking at in corporation street is storage, I have 2 bikes, one is for commuting and its a fairly cheapis 250 quid racing bike but then I have my main bike for rides, that was £700 and I dont want it to get nicked!

Surely I might be fine? surely the drivers aint going to keep speeding along and plow into me? I dont fancy paying for bus passes untill I find a job, apparently for the journey on bus it would be like 3 busses and it would take me longer anyway?

nah, you'll be fine, on your way to college you'd be on the inside of the junction all the way anyway, just stick to the lights control and you'll be fine

as far as storage goes there will probably be something at the building you're looking at but i'd make enquiries and definitely have both bikes insured

I grew up in Altrincham, which is about 8 miles outside (to the south) the City Centre.
I still consider 'Manchester' to be 'where i'm from'.
I'm biased, but i think its the best city in the country. Its got it all.
For students...well, mate! You're gonna' love it! Awesome nights out indeed!

BTW!...all that "Mad 'fer it/Madchester" twaddle died back when the Hacienda and groups like The Stone Roses went belly up!

Well hopefully it'll be fine, on good days I'll be going 17-30mph hopefuly I'll adjust and beat the busses, I can use bus lanes can I?

yes you can use bus lanes and as for finding people for nights out, i'm not sure whether you'd be put in a mancat only flat but if not you'll be in with a big mix of students and they will probably be a good source of places to go out

If you're doing Systems Support at MANCAT then I might yet see you in September in the same class, been at MANCAT for the last year and the facilities are top-notch, however sometimes the staff are tiresome. If you do the Networking (and perhaps Systems Support) then you will work towards your CCNA, the networking do CCNA1,2,3,4 and last year the Systems Support did CCNA 1&2 apparently.

From Ashton bus station is one ride, the 219 drops you off literally right outside MANCAT Opensahw Campus, I live in Denton which is near Ashton and I have to get two bus rides, the bus pass that you can get when you go College is like a megarider only costing something like £8 instead of £10.

Ive been in Manchester for 4 years and I can tell you that Manchester is awesome, much better than London IMO ( I was in London for 2 years before this) :)

The class I will be in will be tought by a guy called Paul ashby if that might be the same one as you are in? Your course the Foundation degree though?

So its 8 quid a week? Still abit much for busses, I only need it 3 days a week I guess, wont need a bus to get into the center its well close by looks of it.
