Whats it like around Manchester?

I've worked at MANCAT and I worked around the corner at Gorton (where Shameless is filmed) and I wouldn't live anywhere near it. For 3-4 miles or so in a circle around the City Centre Manchester is awful. Really, awful. It is a horrid place.
Ah, so you know the place well then. :D

You can't get a whole lot worse than Gorton so I don't blame you.

I wouldn't say it's quite as bad as Gilly is making out.
I grew up in Sale, and while I wouldn't want to live in most places that are near the city I wouldn't describe all of them as 'horrid'
Now that I live in London there are certainly a lot more scummy places down here than I experienced in Manchester.

Thankfully I live in a nice part of London though :)
Places like Sale/Alty are in another league to the likes of Longsight/Wythenshawe/Levenshulme etc. I guess areas always look worse from the outside looking in, but then I live on one of the most hated estates in Stockport and it doesn't seem bad to me. Having said that, there are areas around Manchester I would never move to, some proper dumps.

Ignore Gilly, he's from Leeds (iirc) so was indoctrinated as a child into hating Manchester by his family due to their jealously ;)

Offerton or Brinny?

Brinny is nowhere near as bad as it used to be or it as it's reputation suggests. At least the council got of their arse and sorted the facilities out.

Well when I went to manchester on tuesday I did not see many cycling lanes.

Take a look under the parked cars. Not worth the cost of the green paint if you ask me. Similar with the bus services, if you live on the main student routes (directly south of the Centre) then its a brilliant service. Live anywhere else in Manchester, such as Swinton or Stretford and the service gets very flakey, and if the bus does actually show up it will have a gang of 4-10 teenagers at the back smoking dope and playing Scooter as loud as a tinny sounding mobile phone can manage.

Saying that its a great town, not quite good as Newcastle, but where is?

It's never seemed bad to me tbh. But I wouldn't worry, those new shops/flats won't take long to go down the drain once they're finished. I don't even know why they're bothering really. :p

My Dad's from Wythenshawe and a lot of his family still live around Wythenshawe/Northenden and it's really not all that bad.
Yes, it's obviously not as nice as Sale but compared to some of the areas around South London it's pretty nice!

I work near Elephant & Castle now and 10 minutes walk down the road towards Walworth is incredibly dodgy, much more so than Wythenshawe!

So its kind of risky in winter when it is dark when leaving college to actually cycle or go wait at a bus stop? I noticed there was a lot of chavs around the campus when I was there.

The area itself is actually pretty decent, it's just absolutely steaming with chavs.

Nah. The unsavoury parts of Adswood got flattened over 10 years ago.

Has seemed much less hospitable than offerton definitely and maybe brinny when i've been in the last year, but i care not now, as of today I have completely fled stockport for the city centre :D
