What's wrong with the railways in this country?

Investment in the railway is always a good for me as it's my job:)

Done a fair bit of work on the West Coast Main Line in the past and it really needed it, the metro line in Newcastle is falling to bits, hence why they have started a major upgrade to the infrastructure, it's always the same in this country they let things get behind in investment.
 
Imagine if that £33bn were spent on upgrading what we already have. Not to sound too much like a tree hugger, but how much more landscape can we afford to spoil for the sake of 30mins for the elite to travel on.

There's only so much upgrading you can do to take extra capacity before you simply need to build more track. And HS2 has nothing to do with 10 minutes off London->Birmingham and everything to do with adding freight paths to the WCML.
