I was expecting roughly similar economy to my E90 330d however over 15k it averaged 34mpg.

It depends how you use it. I've a heavier more powerful 5er variant, and have averaged more than 34 MPG. Most people will attest I drive far from slow, but I do spend a good deal of time on the motorway. Long-term I've probably averaged around 36-37 MPG.The best I have got on a full tank whilst trying on a long run was just over 40mpg. That was just after a service, at 60mph, slipstreaming when possible etc...
The auto box really seems to sap economy when paired with the 3.0 diesel. I can't speak for the manual transmission version but buying one of these with an auto box for economy is silly. I think the power delivery of the diesel suits the auto better than the petrol engine but that's about the only advantage of the diesel I can see when comparing the two, like for like.
