When are you going fully electric?

Just had another EV convert in work get his SS car dropped off..

MG Cyberster.. I think it's the entry level 330bhp one, but its the right colour (red), the rear lights look horrific on some of the other colours.

I’d totally have one if we needed a second car but we don’t.

I’d say salary sacrifice has another 4-5 years left to run before the gravy train gets to its final station. Once BIK starts hitting 8/9% I can’t see it being an attractive option, particularly when the underlying lease costs are so high compared to what you can get in the wider market and car list prices are £lol compared to the ‘real’ price.

The PHEV is perfect for our needs. All the benefits of EV but without the range anxiety.
EV will never become the norm until a solution is found for those that cannot charge at/near home imho.

It feels like there's got to be a good solution, though. I appreciate many houses don't have driveways, but how many cars are parked far away from power cables.
The problem 'feels' inherently solvable.

Posted in here previously. Looks okay but I don't have much hope in it being all that great with it being 2.1+ tonnes and Chinese.

I'm all for EV, but it has it's applications and a sports car is very hard to do, and seemingly impossible to do cheaply.

Kerb weight for the 330bhp Trophy is 1850kg.. not exactly light weight, but only 30kg heavier than my Mustang convertible..

Interior wise, it's really nice, lots of leather(ette) etc, and the infotainment is better than most run of the mill brands, it feels very premium which belies the badge.

And I know the badge is difficult to get past, I'm just saying that really it's far nicer than you might imagine once you sit in it! The doors are crazy and already struggling with people stood next to it peering in but it feels far more special than a Z4 M40i and that is more expensive.

BMW use a Great Wall Motors EV platform for the Mini EV so Chinese EV manufacturers are really getting quite well received now.

Still, no disputing that the badge and chinese aspect should normally warrant a cheaper car so this is a departure for them and clearly not that popular!

I haven't paid much attention to this car but damn thats very nice.
Would love to take one for a drive round the country lanes near me, bet its lovely to not have to listen to an engine of any sort.
Maybe I am odd but I dont like the sound of ANY engines, 4 pot diesel, straight 6, whatever, none sound good. Some just sound better than others.

Yeah agreed - I wonder what will happen in its place though. I think this new car I am ordering I'll do 4 years rather than 3. Prices only seem to be going one way, plus the lux tax perks ending.

What do you think needs sorting and how?
The marginal price of the last KWh of generation setting the price of wholesale electricity for the entire country for 30 mins at a time. Bonkers.

Scottish residents are literally subsiding the cost of electricity for London and the south east. If we can regional pricing, the cost in London would be the same (as it’s set be the current market metrics e.g. gas) but the price in Scotland would be half what it is now.

This also drives energy intensive investment out of the north into the SE because there is no cost advantage of moving those jobs up north. So much for leveling up right?

Random question…

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been hearing a noise from outside that sounds like a train horn away off in the distance.

Confused as there’s not a station near me and certainly not one that steam trains run through.. I thought it might’ve been some plant machinery at a building site or something..

Just figured it out, it’s the reverse warning noise on my neighbours new Lexus. :o

Curious, is this a mandated thing and can we expect it for all new electric/hybrid cars?

Ooof, not exactly chuckable. That weight is going to kill the fun of it. It doesn't look like a huge car so why is it so heavy.

Why would it be specific to EV's if its for a reverse warning, how fast do you reverse in an ICE car to be heard.

It's 1850kg kerb weight, it's 'heavy' but its only 30kgs heavier than my Mustang 5.0 convertible..

And its battery packs that make up the majority of the weight, it's also got a pretty decent range considering. (316 Miles WLTP)

A reverse warning for electric operation has been mandated for years as far as I know.

The cold really does sap the batteries doesn't it! Roughly 30-40 miles gone and then during use the range drops away quicker vs actual battery loss. Also discovered that turning off the heating system gives a nice 25 mile increase to the range. Good to know in case needed.

Some of the noises EVs make are louder than an engine :/

Especially the Zoe, sounds exactly like a bad wheel bearing I once had on a Fiat. But blasts it so the whole street can hear.
