When are you going fully electric?

Apparently it’s a Mini only! Ha. I’ve think we’re also leaning toward 2024 and the newer tech, but probably need a test drive first.

If you are going for a 2024 model, there aren't any really great deals on nearly new and the best PCP deals are daft APR's. Given how much the car will lose in the first 2 years, you'd likely be better off grabbing one on a 2 year PCH at ~£8k all in. (SE Classic L2) - you are looking at £30k to get one pre-reg/nearly new and it'll be worth £20k in less than 18 months.

There’s also a 2021. Would it be crazy to go for a slightly older one? It’s pretty much only for driving to a train station!

I honestly don't think I every will. They just don't do anything for me, I drive because I like driving and to me they feel like a new TV, something to go "oooh that's nice" but then you just sit there and watch it and you know it's just a TV.....I am usre there's better
analogies. My next family car is likely to be something with a V8 in it whilst I still can before the UK government puts an end to all that by making it horrifically expensive. Then after that likely a Hybrid of some discription, half the issue is I like estates and there just isn't many EV ones on the market that are not silly money or just meh performance wise.

Completely different car, but the sensible option would be the older on IMO. £14k for a 72 plate (2023 car) 40k miles

Perfect, we have an outdoor socket not too far away. Is there a max length? Could get a socket put on the front of the house easily I guess
Just be careful that the socket doesn't overheat when it's smacking the charge into the car. I did this at first (before I got my charger) with the granny charger set at 13amps, burnt out the socket so dropped the charger to 10amps and all was fine.

Why is cost relevant if you drive because you like driving? You are in the tiny, miniscule minority who do not just use a car as a tool, so surely if it is a hobby you'll want to stick to it regardless of cost. Most people drive to get to places.

I think your concept about EV lacking in power/performance is misplaced.

EV has better bang for buck in terms of power and perf.

Straight line - you won’t get anything close to the EV price mark of an equivalent ICE.

On track performance just note some of the EV track times on Nurburgring as example. Again your run of the mill ICE with the same price won’t touch the same time as these.

How is it preaching? the car you can actually buy is really not great.

Anyway, 54kwh is much more sensible for a car of this size and target market.

Dude its out now, the Mini Cooper E and SE is for sale as a new mini and you cant buy the old one 'new'.

Yes i know the battery was bigger :)

Agreed these make great second cars but you’d be mad to buy a new one, utterly mad.

It was throughly rejected by the market because it’s just too compromised as a car.

Your typical mainstream buyer simply scoffs at the idea that you can release a brand new car with a 100-120 mile range in 2020/21 at the the price they were originally asking for it. It’s also got rear doors which as any i3 owner will tell you just don’t work for the target customer of this car. For example the person that just does the nursery/school run etc.

Its like they took all the worse bits from the Honda e (range, price) and the i3 (rear doors) and mashed it into their own car. It’s a complete joke of a compliance car and I’m not surprised it’s a commercial failure, the world has moved on since the Nissan Leaf launched in 2011 but Mazda didn’t get the memo.

This is preaching about the de merits of a car you can not buy. Hope this helps you get some context.

I think that’s why she likes it, similar enough to the current one she has. The newer cars are better in terms of technology and seem built around the EV concept, but as a result are also a lot different. Will go and see some on Friday and will report back.

I think she has her eye on this one - https://approvedusedminis.co.uk/vehicle/202411236653325

At least it will be a chance for me to dip my toes into the electric market too, although I’m hoping to hold out a lot longer.

Possibly. Needs to be something small. Are there any viable alternatives?

I don’t think range will ever be an issue, probably 3-5 miles max per day plus chargers where she parks. Anything else I should be showing her?
Hyundai Kona (2021+ facelift, not the current gen) as a second hand car is definitely worth a look. If range really isn't a concern, the 39kWh version should be going for a bit cheaper. The 64kWh is a genuine 200mi+ even in winter if you can stretch and want the range on hand.

What's wrong with the the current Mini? I am still very tempted by a 300hp Clubman lol

It’s broken down again. Emission warning light, stinks and barely runs. I’m hoping I can get it to the mechanic end of the week.

Broke down at the start of the year, no one could work out why, just started going again.

Broke down a couple of years ago, sensor issue, but had to take most of the engine out to get to it.

It’s just become unreliable. I doubt the many short journeys help. Lovely car other than that!

When I was Granny charging people recommended a socket from Amazon so you could program it to come on at cheap rate times.
I then bought a proper extension lead that can carry an EV charge, drilled through the wall and put it in the socket.
YOU MUST NOT CHARGE MORE THAN 10 AMPS, cheap Chinese chargers come with 13 amps as an option.
The extension lead is 10 metres and is in that box on the left with the Granny charger padlocked to it.
I put the box over there so pedestrians can't see it when walking past.
If this info is useful I can link the parts.

That is pretty clever. How do you control whether it charges at 10A or 13A? Is there an option on the charger?

I think you are reading cross posts. My post was referencing the MX-30, I’ve not mentioned the Mini at all.

Edit: given we’re talking cross posts, there isn’t a new MX-30?
