When are you going fully electric?

I've done a few long journeys in the ioniq 38kw now and when cruising along the motorway it's surprising (ish) just how much more efficient the journey is if I keep it <70 as opposed to just a few mph >70. Today I covered a return journey of 130 miles and on the way there I set it at 68. On the return leg I thought I'd speed up a bit and just watched that battery disappear. Back to ECO+ and 68 on the last leg haha.

Headwind makes a big difference as well, but I have noticed that around 66-68 seems to be the most efficient speed (high speed), that is GPS speed not the car instruments, once you hit 73-75 you require so much more power to drive you thought the air it becomes much less efficient.

It does amaze me how many people rarely use their cars for long journeys. Current situation excepted of course but don't you like to visit places?

I live in the midlands, I go loads of places, none of which is that far away for a day out, or a weekend away (in normal circumstances). Who wants to drive for 3+ hours each way if you are going for such a short time?

I used 3+ hours since you are likely to achieve 60 mph on average, that is 180 miles, which is well within the range of my car on a single charge. How many people go on day trips/days out that are 360+ miles?

My only longer distance driving is taking my son to play in his football games on Saturday & Sunday's (out of lockdown). But that's only up to a 200 mile round trip, if it's a ground further away.

Never fancy a weekend in Edinburgh? Seeing what it's like in the Lake District? Perhaps a tour of Cornwall?

We're all supposed to be into cars and driving guys :D

Furthest I've driven in the UK from Devon is... John O Groats.

I'd rather fly up to Scotland.
We did do the Lake District in Sept 2018 but that drive turned into a disaster. It took us 6 hours to drive 165 miles, mainly because we left on a Friday afternoon (3pm) and it was traffic jams all the way up there, arriving at 9pm :(
When you have kids you really want travel time to be less, so you can spend your time doing stuff, which mostly means flying to the far away places.

Before Kids I used to drive to Wales, Scotland, Lakes many times a year for Mountain Bike trips

I suppose half the problem is it takes 2 hours - 3 in summer - to get as far Bristol, so everywhere is a road trip for me :D

But of course this and my love of big road trips shapes my view on things like EV - as is natural I suppose. It's why long range is so important to me - outside of the current circumstances, it's what we do, whether in our own or hired cars.

I thought range was more important to me but when I thought realistically about how far I drive/want to drive now for pleasure or business I realised even an 180-200 mile range will do. Last time I did a really long jaunt was in 2016. Since then it's been Cardiff, Bristol or West Berks, from West Devon. All of these for me should be a quick juice up only, if at all, 20 - 30 mins. A toilet break and a wander.

Driven 45k+ miles PA in the past sometimes but cannot do that anymore. The roads are much busier these days too,it's less enjoyable now doing long trips by car.

The way I see it now is 200 miles is my limit in one go, at least without a good break. Will look forward to the solid state batteries and quick charging to come but current EV's can work for many IMO.

Got used to the i3 now and very happy with the choice. Now it's adapted to my driving style is showing a range of 180-190 miles when I leave home. It'll be interesting doing a long journey involving motorway but with pre-heating of the battery, which I'm not doing atm when pottering around, will be good to see what I can get out of it.
According to the driving analyser I could improve on acceleration a bit but still getting 3/5 :).

I’m looking forward to the road trip as I don’t live in the arse end of nowhere. My mate took an IPACE to Le Mans classic a few years ago.

Don’t mind stopping as we tend to stop atleast 20mins with kids and now also dogs. Alternative is you have to go to fuel stations every week and listen to a Diesel engine.:pWill be interesting if a more normal 2021 proves me to be naive...

The cold air density impact on aerodynamics is less significant than the additional energy for cabin and battery heatiing that cold requires;
as an alternative to pre-heat I'd read you can apparently, more efficiently(heat from chemical reaction?), choose to charge the battery that final bit before departure, price per unit considered.

new peugot re-branding/ tv adds are 'interesting', no longer the coy french references to affairs/families - be like a lion instead ?

Think you are getting Peugeot and Renault mixed up. Peugeot have mostly been ‘The Lion goes from strength to strength’.

With regards to busy roads and being less enjoyable, I found that the Mercedes Drive Pilot in my E class has been transformative for long distance motorway driving, to the point where when choosing my next car I wanted to make sure I still had it or a similar system.

It's like adaptive cruise control, but even safer.

Ultimately I settled on the Polestar 2 which uses Volvo's pilot assist.

What do you drive that 180 miles is "well within the range" at 60mph?

Also, you still need to plan around a destination with charging, and hope it's working/not in use when you arrive.

I think you missed my point, I wouldn't drive for 3+ hours for a day out, unless it was something mega special. My limit is probably 90-100 miles/2 hours each way. If it was a 3-4 day break then that is different of course, but I class that as a holiday, not a day out.

This is the key sticking point for me from a work perspective. The range of the current crop of cars is fine for me day to day, assuming I start with a full battery.

If I'm arriving at my overnight stop at 7pm (or later) on 10 % I don't want to be spending time trying to find somewhere to charge the car up ready for the next day. At the moment the electric charging provision at the sort of places I stay is a token gesture (at best) and if two other EVs turn up I'd basically be stuffed. I'm sure the infrastructure will get there though.

This is my concern, too (that being said, I have ordered an EV). I travel a lot for work, and I can't get to/from LHR on one charge - so I'll need to figure something out.
