When are you going fully electric?

With the decision to get a van and keep old car.. Probably looking at 5 years minimum. Probably closer to 10 without a serious reduction in used prices.

Have you looked at used EVs recently?

Used EV depreciation is back in line with normal pre-covid car depreciation. There are some deals to be had at the moment.

I expect my idea of a deal is much less. My. Most expensive car was 7k current car was 3k!

Just on a family holiday and drove in the Cupra from Surrey to Aviemore, Scotland

Absolutely no bother at all. Stopped more often than we needed as someone inevitably needed a wee or food before the car needed charging. Bunch of big hubs along the route with no queues at all - couple of Gridserve hubs, a couple of Ionity, a Fastned outside Glasgow and then a Tesla hub in Aviemore. Only slightly ropey one was Sandbach services where there are just 2 slightly older Gridserve units and we were lucky to get one but that was our choice to risk it because we wanted McDonalds for lunch otherwise would have stopped at the Stafford Ionity instead.

Going back down the A1 on the way back so will see the other side too in a few days

I used to do a similar trip but coming from the South West, with kids or even as a kid we'd stop off at Tebay services for an hour and that was about it, if an early start stop off for breakfast once we'd cleared Birmingham.

I'd find stopping anything like that often, never mind any range anxiety, tedious.

Yeah I do a similar trip from just outside Birmingham with one short stop. Last week I filled up with diesel in Kerry, Ireland, drove across to Dublin, jumped on a ferry, then drove 200 miles home without even thinking about it and still have a 100 miles of diesel in the tank. I stuck the same route into ABRP with something like a Kona and there were short stops everywhere. I know that's the future (and the present for a lot of people) but for now it just seems a bit more awkward than I'd like.
EV's are improving though, even the new MG4 is close to / over 300 miles range, so it's getting more doable for me.

Don’t get me wrong, the MG4 is a really good value for money but a 300 mile range car, it’s not.

It’s real world efficiency on a trunk road, driving up to 70mph is more like 3.7miles/kWh. If you drive it from 100% to 0%, you are looking at 240 miles at most. You’d need to be hitting 4.7 to get 300 miles from 64kwh and that’s not happening unless you are driving it at a very ‘steady’ speed.

Chanjy didn't say what speed he drove at - but you have the trade-off in the ev to drive slower/60 and get more range and, with reduced stops, reduced overall journey time

There's a new extended range coming out with a 77kWh battery and allegedly 320 miles range.
And an 'X power' model with 400bhp...

Here's a decent review/ real world range of the mg4 for anyone in doubt.

I think 300 miles would be the range I'd be looking for. At that point almost all trips are 1 stop. And you don't have to worry about range when your driving locally at your destination

Insane prices on Agile tomorrow. I’m currently charging for “free” well getting 11p to charge 66% to 100% but overnight predictions could be over -10p/kWh around 9am so might just turn off charging ha. Glad I have an “inefficient” EV these days :p

Not doing it to save the planet then?

You don’t worry locally at 200miles range either. How often do you do 300miles in one go ? Like actual trips you do

My family are 250 miles away but that's not an issue as its main road driving so 1 stop isn't the end of the world.

But it's mainly when you go away camping without electricity in rural spots. You've got the drive there. The driving while you're there and the drive back. Having to plan around charging in rural locations isn't ideal vs a ICE where you know its no issue.

It feels like spending a tonne of cash for something that isn't better all round. Which for me it needs to be.

Well that’s the same logic for a proper holiday let’s be honest. Horses for courses. I’d rather stop on long trips in the summer than freezing cold days to fill up on commutes…

But that’s post experience of both…

My main one is that I need to get to a hospital and back, a bit over 200 miles there and back. No stopping on the way there and back, and nowhere to charge at the hospital (currently) There are chargers there, 2 in the underground car park, and I've seen two on the street, but they are predictably always taken.
A lot of the cars I have been looking at seem to drop to below 200 once the weather gets cold. I quite like the look of the Megane e tech, 280 miles range, great! Then you read about it doing 180 when it's cold...It's not impossible to stop, but it's an inconvenience I don't have to factor in just now.

There’s not one fast charger on a 100mile trip ? I can see the logic then and also public’s charging is pretty expensive so only needs a small top up on the way back to get you home.
