When do you change tyres...

Don't talk to me about tyres this week. After seeing numerous accidents from faulty tyres, I consider myself a bit anal about how often I check them, usually at least once a week.

MOT yesterday, expecting it to fly through. Oh no, "Your front tyres are down to the wire, the wire's actually frayed in parts". What, I thought. So I went and had a look... tracking at the front must be screwed, because there's about 4mm on the outsides and -1mm on the inside. :(

Great chance to bin those runflats.

He already had binned them, now has some Yokohama's on it, I'm going for another set of Hankook V12 Evos, had a set on my Prelude, set on the Volvo and four come in at £500 fitted from my mechanic.

Usually as they approach the 1.6mm mark. By that point they are usually noticeably balder on the outsides than in the middle anyway

My lease company will not change them above 3mm, so between 3mm and the legal limit when I can change a pair on the same axle.

I usually change them around MOT time, despite being over the tread marker. Any other time I'll change them when they actually hit the marker.

When they look like this i may think of changing them...

But really i change around the 2mm mark, got to get value for money n all that.

~4-5mm last time, bloody P6000s that came with the car were scaring me!

2.5-3mm usually.

Down to the wear markers for me even if the shoulders are smooth. Law states you need legal <1.6mm across 3/4 of the width.

When close to the 1.6mm limit. I do too many miles a year not to get every last bit out of them where possible. That said I have 2 sets though so have winters on in winter with considerably more tread usually (otherwise they are pointless).

Usually I don't get them lower than 2mm although it's hard to get them changed sometimes as the directors (company car) are tight and want a 2009 Mondeo to do 40K on the fronts!
