My car has a "Shift Indicator" on which recommends if you should be moving up or down gears and even indicates which gear it "thinks" you should be in.
When I first saw this in action I was not convinced, I thought it was mad suggesting certain gears when it did.
I now actually follow these recommendations and I'll find myself in 6th at 40mph. My fuel economy really isn't bad for a 2.0 TSI based vehicle. When I now look at the "suggested" gears I can see where the system is coming from.
In the Jag I use it anything over 25mph, as its just a cruiser for getting me around in winter months, its not a performance car so I just go for maximum economy, generally returns 25mpg, plus it pulls fine in 5th from 30mph being a 3.0l V6.
Agree on all must the most reasonably flat roads. The Fez sits at 30 just fine on a fairly flat road; i'd drop to 4th or even 3rd as the conditions change.
