When do you use 5th gear

the 200SX sounds a feels like a pig below 40 in 5th, and it sends all the gauges the wrong way!

My car has a "Shift Indicator" on which recommends if you should be moving up or down gears and even indicates which gear it "thinks" you should be in.
When I first saw this in action I was not convinced, I thought it was mad suggesting certain gears when it did.

I now actually follow these recommendations and I'll find myself in 6th at 40mph. My fuel economy really isn't bad for a 2.0 TSI based vehicle. When I now look at the "suggested" gears I can see where the system is coming from.

I would never drive at less than 40mph in anything more than 4th, plus I tend to get up to speed in 4th on NSL's and just drop straight into 6th.

According to the screen on my dash, I seem to get best MPG around 2k rpm, so would only go into 5th if doing over 40 really.

What RPM is it in 4th at 30? For me 3rd at 30MPH is 2200rpm while 4th is about 1600pm, 5th isn't that far above idle revs :p

I'm in 5th as soon as its not going to struggle, which is about 30. For the odd hill I will have to drop to 4th but it pulls fine in 5th.

Just had a look today, I usually change by feel of the car but on observing the speedo it appears to be at 40mph 2k rpm on average...

In the Jag I use it anything over 25mph, as its just a cruiser for getting me around in winter months, its not a performance car so I just go for maximum economy, generally returns 25mpg, plus it pulls fine in 5th from 30mph being a 3.0l V6. :)

5th is a little too much for a 1.25, tend not to use it around town as I couldnt accelerate enough if I needed too.

Agree on all must the most reasonably flat roads. The Fez sits at 30 just fine on a fairly flat road; i'd drop to 4th or even 3rd as the conditions change.
