When is a new 360 too loud?

Mines horrendously loud. So far I've swapped out the original fans, which were Deltas, for some Talismoon whisper quiet max ones.
They are still on 5v, and I'd say that its changed the sound rather than made it much quieter.

I've also had some Dynamat Extreme on order, and that has arrived today, and I'll be fitting that latter to see if it makes a difference. There is an article on Extremetech suggesting that you can get a 4db reduction in sound levels at a distance of 4 inches. I've got a thread where I'm documenting it.

Obviously I'm not worried about invalidating the warranty, or if the material will change the thermal profile and cause a RROD.

...anyway the noise is a GOOD thing! - at least you know its still working lol.

Seriously though if mine were only as loud as my pc then I'd be very happy, if it was as quiet as my PS3 I'd be delighted. Whether you can take it back - I don't know. I suppose it would be up to you to prove it being a fault.

I can never understand why people complain about the noise, do you all have the volume on your TV turned down as low as it can go or something?:confused:

No, but Id rather prefer to have it on a lower setting so that the actual volume my ear determines it at is the same level as the much higher volume it has to be when playing a game and the xbox is going at full tilt. Its the delicate things like sneaking through grass near a building and wanting to hear either footsteps on the wooden floor or a grenade rattle, even long distance shots are muted by the xbox running. I think mine is more of an issue as i have it on the floor under the TV stand (so it doesnt cook itself).

Good thing HD-DVD fell over, cos it would be more annoying then. The PS3 would not be so well recieved as a BR player if it made the noise the Xbox does.

Its stupidly loud for what is essentially a DVD drive.

But what I'm saying is at normal volume levels it drowns out the sound of the 360, I have never found I have had to turn the TV any louder than I would anyway. I can only hear the 360 over the sound of the game if it is turned down really quiet, much quieter then I would normally have the volume.

Maybe I'm just going deaf :p

Just sold out and bought a 360 elite (always used a PC for gaming). I know the 360 is loud but when is loud too loud?

Just ring em up and find out :)

Oh and welcome to console gaming. I joined tha ranks just under 2 months ago, and have totally lost interest in gaming on my PC :D

so its either a lot of lucky people or some people are over blowing the situation?
I think that is the most likey answer ;)
Yeah, damn you must be right. The hundreds of people on the internet, including games journo's, claiming their 360's are too loud are just making it up and you are of course right - the 360 isn't loud at all

I like playing games and watching films where you have the periods of no sound interupted by drama inducing sound effects, rather than the dull hum of one of Mr Gates rushed products bluring it altogether as background noise. :p Sound has a huge effect on creating atmosphere, it would be SO MUCH BETTER without the noise.

To top it off, the noise from the fans cooling the thing is ridiculous, yet out of all my electrical products the Xbox is the only one I have overheating concerns with and take precautions in its placement and use. Nice.

Here is my comparison to clarify how noisy mine is.
Both my system & my sexbox are run in my front room, My system has a 7800GS+ cooling fan, An Arctic freezer, 2 x 80 mm fans in the front & 1 x 120 mm fan exhausting it all out the back, My system is clocked & All the fans spin on at good speeds constantly.
When i switch my sexbox on it's Louder & i can clearly hear it, when the disc spins up it gets much noisier.
In game i just turn my TV up & drown it out but i can honestly say that i have my TV on about 15 digits volume wise compared to about 8 when watching a film.
I have Never been bothered by noise though as on my system i use headphones to game & on my sexbox i have decent speakers in my telly & it goes through my house Hifi as well so it rattles the walls most of the time as i am fortunate enough to live alone. The only time it bothers me is when i am cruising the dashboard but i get over that by bunging some tunes on.
On the whole i am not one to moan about noise but facts are facts & my sexbox is Noisy & it's one of the later 175w ones, Is an Arcade & was only purchased in November. It sits on an Antique table of its own in the corner of the room where nobody passes so it will never be touched or knocked about, I even cover it with a towel when it's not in use :p
Another thing, When i added my 2nd hand HD a while back it was No noisier.

I think with my own comparison between my system & my sexbox it's quite reasonable to ask for a Quieter gaming console. My system is an old AGP rig overclocked & fitted with loads of extra fans all running at good speeds to aid cooling. If my rig can be as quiet as it is then the sexbox can be just as quiet.
I have to say that it's the DVD drive that makes the unacceptable noise the rest i could quite happily live with without moaning about it.

I can hear yours from the opposite end of Queens Park :p

I do think the difference in noise levels is down to the different makes of DVD drives myself. Would be interesting if people can post what drive they have and also if their 360 is noisey or not - then we can put this one to bed once and for all ;)

determine which drive your console has here http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/Xbox_360_DVD_Drive_Comparison.htm

This is why it baffles me that people claim to use the machine as their DVD player and claim it is not loud. Sure if you are watching Arnie films with loud explosions every second or Fast and Furious you won't notice it. What about the quiet moments in a film.

I can happily say that anyone sitting within 6 feet of their 360, in a silent part of a film, on DVD, (of which there are so many in so many films it's not even worth mentioning) who cannot hear their console needs their ears testing (just as a precaution).

When you people go to 360 lans have you ever compared the noise?

I have had 4 consoles. Not one has been loud. I think it's just some people have pin point hearing.

But I'm one of those people that doesn't hear something unless I need to. For instance I wouldn't know if it was raining or a car pulled up outside. Because it effects me in no way lol.

Happens in games too, Lost Odyssey, Where you read the past memories, with nice atmospheric music. yeah, Mine's more a case of reading memories, with music mixed with vrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. :p

Mines a Hitachi & it's Noisy. I've been trying to think of a standard item that makes the same amount of noise but i can't.
Like i say though i don't care about the noise as i only use mine for gaming & have the volume on the telly & hifi up loud anyways.
What i do care about is people dismissing other peoples Personal opinions.
I don't care about noise & my old overclocked system with Multiple added fans is Quieter than my sexbox & that my dears is a Fact :D
