That is why the thread is pointless as the OP will have different tastes to everyone.

I am surprised you disliked Thetford. The forestry around is simply stunning.

Its mainly just plantation. And it's so flat. There are a few. Nice bits. But east anglia is just so arable. It isn't for me.

But I agree, threads like these are not the most useful due to vast difference in preference

As covered by others, renting isn't the worst idea right now (assuming it isn't a fortune)

Interest rates likely going up, house prices likely going down - you don't want to be in negative equity with and offered a high interest rate come re-new time. Tough one :)

If I could I'd move to Scotland just a general nicer place to be than anywhere in England and Wales providing your not in any major city's
I lived in Scotland on a farm. No cities. The nearest town was six miles away and that had a population of less than 4,000. It was famed for James Barrie known for Peter Pan. And, of course, The Ball of Kirriemuir.

Would like to be somewhere affordable for buying a house, nice scenery around, work prospects and as decent weather as the UK allows. I understand there might have to be compromises.

You don't mention what kind of house or if you plan to bring up children in the future. Kids probably mean being somewhat closer to your respective parents or suffer their wrath and the struggles of bringing up a child without their help, can be a blessing though if they're the interfering sort :D.

I've lived in a few places in both England and Scotland and visited almost all the major towns and cities due to work in the past. The list of places I'd consider moving to is short but I won't mention them in case I offend anyone :D. By sheer chance we moved to the Highlands north of Inverness and it's great and all, but not without it's sacrifices - the weather can be a bit bleak at times, I've seen a 15C delta between the temps up here and the south of England. You need a car to get around because the towns and villages can be miles apart. However, you get so much more house/land for your money if that's important. The air is as clean and fresh as you'll get and the scenery needs no introduction. As for work prospects that depends on what you and your fiancé want to do for a living - there are many industries here particularly renewables and even a spaceport if you go really north!

We he head up Scotland once a year for a weeks get away stayed near piklockery everywhere clean friendly people

we have talked about moving up there when the wife finished uni for nursing but her health issues forced her to give up uni made us change our minds among other things

South - South Downs, large area with excellent working opportunities all around but hideously expensive for anything decent.
Mid - Peak district - Big cities nearby, suffers more than the South downs because of this proximity, very busy in summer, not cheap.
North - Anywhere away from a big city/town is nice and rural, cheapo houses, great scenery etc. Not many good jobs. Avoid the tourist traps.

Bonus - Pembrokeshire, lovely area but no jobs.

Can't say I'm unhappy to have relocated to the North East. The coast is stunning and you can be on the West Coast in a couple of hours spirited, fun driving.
I would second that .... we moved to York after years working abroad, plenty to do in town and lovely countryside close by. Bit pricey now though?

Yes, a lovely place with the salmon leap at the dam. It's Pitlochery by the way. This is where we lived:

Then I went to university in Edinburgh then Watford. I travelled on business a lot but now er live here. This is the Roman Ridge.

Pitlochry and the surrounding area is lovely, I could happily live around there. Personally (and it is a personal choice at the end of the day) I quite like the area around Falkirk, close enough to both Edinburgh and Glasgow, and a short drive to the highlands.

You already know Cornwall but again it all depends on budget, we had less than half the average house price in the SW at that time to spend but it was cash so looked at lots and lots of properties that were 100k or under and ticked the near the coast, in the countryside box, made some downright rude offers (on houses that were way way over 100k) and got a place needing tlc (2 of the outbuildings had doors seized shut, garden overgrown) but actually a newish private build.

This was just a jungle.........

I knew you would post this haha. I'm sure you realise that firstly you were just lucky back then at that price and secondly it's impossible to buy anything like that for under 250000. There is a housing shortage in Cornwall and prices are crazy, people can't even find decent rentals.

I have updated the original post with more information. Thanks for all the replies so far. I'm just trying to get an idea from actual people of places they like and why really. There is so much information and so many places that I could choose. This just helps so I appreciate the input

Nearer 400k now tbh ;) but we were errr lucky near Dewsbury as well ,that also needed work and under 50 percent market value.
lucky to pay that mortgage off in 9 years on that and lucky to refurb it ourselves including new kitchen and sell for cash (becoming homeless for a while)
Also luckily we lived in the car in trips to Cornwall so we could see every single dross property on the market
luckily the garden has being totally transformed by us ,I've rebuilt the boiler and...........list is too big
but no to anyone who is scared of getting grubby hands or scared of change or has no financial acumen they should accept their lot and stay put :)

Nothing wrong with St Austell at all

Yes the wages are low and house prices high but you can get crack from any number of the smack heads in the town centre and you can watch them jump off the tower block like lemmings most nights. Great entertainment.

Forgot to mention the incredible dial up infrastructure, truly next gen.

the people at work who live their call it st Awful , but we viewed in Bodmin as well, its great for the shops but pleased i don't live there

Edit.still a long list of cheap at the time stuff on my rightmove. example most fell through hence widening the area
2nd edit ,cheap and potential for improving, listed can be a problem though
One in Scotland but the timing was no good , we were living in Yorkshire with rubbish neighbours and was just a wish as hadn't sold
