Where is the first floor?

I don't recall seeing a 0 in any lifts or on any signage recently. They all say Ground. Why does it have to be alphanumeric? Surely a numeric system covers all bases?

Lift in my office has a 0... painted on the wall by the lifts is a large 'G' then 1st and 2nd floors have 1 and 2 respectively. Think even they can't decide :D

Its the first floor if thats where you start.

However to me, first floor means the first floor above ground level. Not by scientific reasoning, just how it is to me... :)

Drinking ground coffee whilst making a jigsaw with a jig saw on the bottom of an opentop bus means your argument is invalid due to the fact it has no legs.

That's the whole point, the american system isn't numeric. To steal Tuppy's code from earlier in the thread look for yourself.

Code:
Real Numbers GB US
     2 2 3
     1 1 2
     0 GF 1/GF
    -1 L1 L1
    -2 L2 L2

Say I am on the 2nd floor and want to go down 2 floors. In the UK system I go down to 0 or GF, 2-2=0... perfect!

Now I am in an American building on the 2nd floor and want to go down 2 floors. Now I am on floor L1... er... 2-2=-1?

Outrageous! :confused::mad::confused:

You're in a building and ask someone you want to go to to womens lingerie, they wouldnt say its 2 floors down they'd say its on the 2nd floor. So maths is not relevant.

Exactly my point, so if maths is not relevant at all why confuse matters and use numbers at all, it's not a numeric system. May as well call the floors Cartman, Kenny, Stan, and Kyle. "Where's the women's lingerie?", "On Cartman.".

because cartman could be anywhere. at least if someone said go to the second floor in america you'd go to the second floor of the building unlike us brits who'd go to the third floor.

Ok so your saying it should go:

-3rd floor
-2nd floor
-Ground floor

Right?

Lets say it is a building with basement levels, now what is the name of the floor below the ground floor in your naming system?

By the American system, it would be the -2nd floor? :p

What if they've got a mezzanine? ;)

That's correct. In programming, arrays are normally indexed from 0. Arrays are a list of items and if the array starts from 0 that means 0 is the first object. Therefore, first can be 0.

Also, Tuesday can be yesterday, today and tomorrow and there's nothing that you can do about it.

OMG

I like the chinese way of doing days and months.

January translates to 1 moon, February is 2 moon etc..
Monday translates day 1, Tuesday is day 2 etc..
