Where is the first floor?

Wow! I'm impressed this is still going on.

They're both what we like to call NAMING CONVENTIONS. A convention is a guideline with respect to situation and often, thanks to the extent English language, with respect to PERSONAL PREFERENCE.

Now, I don't wanna confuse anyone here but might I suggest not arguing about the PERSONAL PREFERENCE of whoever designed/ named the floors of individual buildings?

If I recall correctly, in Japan many hospitals were built without a 4th floor. And by this I mean, in their NAMING CONVENTION, they go Floor 1>Floor 2> Floor 3> Floor 5... etc. The reason being is that (one of) the Japanese words for the number 4(shi, if you're interested) also means 'death' and so the designers(/whoever named the floor) decided 'maybe we don't wanna have a floor in a hospital called death'.

In summation, people can name their floors whatever the hell they want. Christ! Thank you for your time.

Honestly I think most people in here simply have nothing better to do, I think we are all only semi-serious. :p

However I don't think it's an argument about preference, we are simply debating which system makes the most logical sense. It's obvious people can name the floor whatever the hell they like, as much is apparent when you walk into any building that has a weird system in place.

I would argue though that if your going to name your flooring system using an illogical system which completely skips 0 and goes from 1 to -1 on the number line you instantly would be just as well served naming your floors after characters in south park. As soon as you skip a number there's no longer a point in using a numerical system, it's broken. :)

I asked you 3 questions.

If its in the order they were built, I just gave you a scenario where it was built at the same time.

If it is when the customer walks into the building, what does it not matter? That was half your argument ! What logical pattern are you presenting here exactly?

By missing out the ground floor totally ?

To be totally honest mate, I forgot which side I was on around page 4 :D

Guys it's simple... The 1st floor is the second floor up. OBVIOUSLY!

Ground floor
Mezzanine floor
1st floor

Simples.

Grrrrr!!!!

walked in town at lunch. Debenhams had a window sign saying 'SuperDry collection on the Ground Floor'

left my phone in the office else I would have taken a photo and posted it on here

Did you forget you are in England and not America?

Or a random name, like Ground?

I've just had a thought

Ground floor technically doesn't have to be a floor at all. My original thinking was that because it had the word floor in it, it had to be a floor. That was an error on my part.

How many other things have words associated with them that has nothing to do with it

Floor Mop............has the word floor in it, yet it's a mop not a floor

Hot Dog..........it's hot, but it's a sausage from a pig not a dog

The term dog has been used as a synonym for sausage since 1884 and accusations that sausage makers used dog meat date to at least 1845.[18] In the early 20th century, consumption of dog meat in Germany was common.[19][20] The suspicion that sausages contained dog meat was "occasionally justified".[21]

What's your point? Both systems have a ground.

In the UK system Ground=0 in the American system Ground=1.

I don't recall seeing a 0 in any lifts or on any signage recently. They all say Ground. Why does it have to be alphanumeric? Surely a numeric system covers all bases?
