Not had one of these threads for a while, so thought we'd have an updated one :-) For the Millennium, you can choose between NYE2000 or NYE2001. Technically, 2001 was correct because there wasn't a year 0, but spiritually most people celebrated it in 2000.

For me:

'99 eclipse - was at Grandparents in Devon thus correct place for totality (other correct place being Cornwall). We went up a local TV mast hill. Lots of kids there and they howled like wolves during the totality. Usual dismal English weather though, so no 'sun' to see. Stuck a VHS tape in Grandparents' VCR though so managed to record a lot of the TV footage.

Millennium (NYE2000) - big disappointment for me. I was between uni semesters, so was up for pubbing but couldn't find a group to join as my parents lives in the middle of nowhere. So was just a low key night with my parents who invited some of their friends around who I didn't know. Still a bit narked off about it today lol.

Princess Diana - it was almost the end of the summer school hols (about to start my upper 6th). Got up late like 10:30, showered and dressed. Then downstairs, my parents said in the exact words "there's been some disturbing news - Diana has been killed in a car accident". Bizarre day that was, to add to the already pants year that 1997 was.

Jacko - much speculation, and I thought it was a hoax for a good few hours. Was on Skype with my best friend while it unfolded. It was a Wed or Thu night, so was working the next day. I remember slinking off to the local park during lunch for a bit of silence.

Ding dong the Witch is dead - not many ****s given about this tbh and can't even remember which year it was. All I remember was my parents were on a ferry to France when it was announced, so they found out while they were aboard the boat lol :p

9/11 - was working in a library on a sandwich year placement between years 2 and 3 of uni. The boss told us admins to go downstairs and watch the big (at least) 52" flatscreen TV. Would have been unusual and expensive in 2001. Boss said that a bomb has gone off in NY. Turns out that the 'bomb' was a hijacked plane, and we saw the 2nd tower being hit live on the TV. The rest of the week wasn't the same, and the nightclubs weren't as full over the next few weekends, then went back to uni in late Sep to do year 3.

...during the 1999 eclipse?
probably living in a student bubble, was there an eclipse in 1999?
...the Millennium?
Can't have been anything exciting
...when Princess Diana died?
I didn't even have a TV in my student flat, I guess in my flat.
...when Jacko died?
Probably at work reading these forums
...when ding-dong the Witch is dead?
Who?
...during 9/11?
I remember this, I was teaching high school maths to a home schooler, must have been about midday and the radio or TV must have been on in background. I vaguely remember saying, 'It's not exactly a huge shock as they have been threatening this kind of things for years but very sad.

Eclipse - don't remember as i wasn't interested
Millennium - drunk somewhere
Princess Diana died - i was baby-sitting for a friends kids
Jacko died - don't remember as i wasn't interested
ding-dong the Witch is dead - as much as i admired Maggie, can't remember where i was
during 9/11 - Hospital bed in Weston-Super-Mare General. Had been in a medically induced coma/sedation for 2 weeks and after coming round the first thing i saw was The Sun newspaper with the twin towers collapsing on the front page. A very surreal moment thinking that i had woken up to what looked like the 3rd world war.

1999 eclipse - in my mums flat in Woolwich. Wasn't much of an eclipse where I was.

The Millennium - celebrated it in Greenwich. Stood on the meridian line when the clock struck 12.

Princess Diana's death - fishing on a pier in Hastings. It was blowing an absolute gale.

When Jacko died - I had just gone to bed and was watching the TV when it came up as a newsflash.

Thatcher - can't remember. I think I was just indoors.

9/11 - I had just got up. Sat down with a bowl of cereal and switched the telly on. Don't think I stopped watching all day.

All boring apart from 9/11 for which I was in the air at the time to Vienna for work.
Arrived at customer site wondering why the lazy gits were watching some crappy disaster movie instead of working .... then I noticed the CNN logo in the corner ....

remember been at work in dewsbury for eclipse as we all went outside and it er went a bit dark ,same for 911 listened in horror to radio at work
dianna i was still a tourist then and was camping in st aggie ,the guy who told me was the sort who gets pleasurein passing on bad news ,i didn't like that
the rest didnt make an impact

Remember the eclipse. Standing in back garden.

9/11 will never forget sitting in a science lesson talking to best mate saying it would be weird if able to predict something. He commented like what and I said like a bomb going off in a skyscraper. Walked home that day as was nice weather and my dad was off, opened the door to a TV showing tower burning and replays. Straight back out shouting to me mate who didn't believe me. Said wait till he gets in.

Me dad then told me what had happened.

Others don't really carry significance to me but remember calling my granddad (ex miner) who I remember being especially happy on the phone.

We were at some event when Diana died so the news didn't filter through at first (before the days when everyone had a smartphone, etc.) I remember we saw flags flying at half mast on nearby churches and a military site and were like uh oh that can't be good.

9/11 I was sat at home playing quake 3 on a US server with some friends who lived in New York and spent the rest of the day on voice chat with one of them who could see it unfolding out the window from his apartment.

Eclipse - standing in street with my friends waiting for the aliens

Millenium - at home alone as my dad was on deployment and mum was working, had my pc turned on waiting for the Y2K bug to kill it

Princess Di - at home in Plymouth, got up early to watch C4 telly and the news was wall to wall, went upstairs and told my dad "Diana has died" he cried - one of the few times I've seen him do that

Jacko - walked downstairs on a day off, the wife said "Jacko is dead" to which I replied "Ok whats the punchline"

Maggie - pounding the landings on B Spur, HB3 Highdown - some of the older cons were celebrating, I helped by confiscating their TV.

9/11 - came home from school, mum was watching the news at 3:15, something she never did, thought it was a film. Shocked when I fully understood what I was watching, Dad came home and we went to play 9 holes.

7/7 - In Cyprus on the first holiday with the wife, some fat bloke from Sheffield was saying we should go to RAF Akrotiri to arm ourselves for the war - madness.

Think i just peered out a window and thought it got a bit dark but saying that Scotland in August, it was probably raining :D

...when Princess Diana died?

...during 9/11?

during the 1999 eclipse?
Messing about on the MTB's outside, bit of an anticlimax.

...the Millennium?
Round at some friends house getting minging, to be fair it was probably the best New Year of my Younger years,
if i remember correctly i believe it was Metallica - Whiskey in a jar that was playing in the background at the bells.

...when Princess Diana died?
School possibly i dont remember exactly.

...when Jacko died?
Basic training, I remember it quite vividly strangely enough, seems like just yesterday.

...when ding-dong the Witch is dead?
Cant recall, I do remember reading it on BBC news but where i was or what i was doing I havnt a clue.

...during 9/11?
I remember getting finished at college early having a quick beer at the pub and coming home, must have ben just after lunch time, turned on the news, at that point it was not long after the first tower had been hit, I was glued to the TV all day, I remember watching the 2nd plane hit, then both towers collapse, I dont think i quite understaood the mavity of what was happening or had any realisation of the impact that these events would have on the world.

...during the 1999 eclipse? No idea!
...the Millennium? In a pub called the white horse. Toilets blocked up and the amount of cash the landlord handed the plumber he called out was impressive.
...when Princess Diana died? In bed at uni in Hull. Woke up to miserable music on the radio so knew something was up
...when Jacko died? No idea, don't care.
...when ding-dong the Witch is dead? Do you mean thatcher? Can't remember.
...during 9/11? At work at a robotics company, only had a radio.
