Where were you when...?

...during the 1999 eclipse? In bed watching tv coverage, very overcast outside that morning

...the Millennium? Watching The Matrix for the first time, with gf

...when Princess Diana died? Woke up to instrumental version of Seal's "Kiss from a rose" being played on the radio at ~0830, instantly felt something big had happened overnight

...when Jacko died? Pass

...when ding-dong the Witch is dead? Pass

...during 9/11? Woke up very late, turned on tv news moments after the first plane impact

99 Eclipse,

Watching it with friends in a mate's back garden through a peephole lens with beers. I think we were on GCSE study leave, or had just finished exams.

Millennium

At a family party in Northern Ireland. Incredibly pee'd off that I wasn't at home celebrating with friends and that my older cousins had gone out with their uni mates to places that needed ID. Spent the entire evening sat in the corner listening to the Gatecrasher event at Don Valley Stadium on my radio walkman, getting drunk and not speaking to anyone.

Princess Diana

Woke up on the Sunday, my mum was crying and said, "sit down - something awful has happened... Diana is dead!" I was more surprised that she thought I would be that bothered. I could not have cared less to be honest. Felt bad for Wills and Harry, but in the end I just remember the scandals with Will Carling and Dodi, and I was not a fan of the Royals back then. Went to church as per usual and lots of people were wailing and the priest did a special mass. Ridiculous.

Jacko

Not sure, but attended a Jacko themed party either that night or the day after. I had forgotten how many decent songs he had.

Maggie

No idea. Well done making your political bias obvious though.

9/11

Was working an abnormally quiet lunch shift at a pub in the weeks before started first year at uni and came back from work to see my dad (retired) sat in front of the TV, mouth open. Within a minute or two of me getting in we watched the second plane hit. I will always remember my dad saying at that point. "Oh ****. This is bad. This is really bad." Spent the entire day watching the news. It is one of those moments in life that is seared into my brain.

...during the 1999 eclipse?

At work at RAF Lossiemouth, Scotland. The wife at the time (ex-wife since 2001) wanted to go home to Cornwall to see it but I really didn't want to drive all that way for something I couldn't care less about. As it turned out it was a damp squib anyway so I made the right choice.

...the Millennium?

Staying at my fathers in Newlyn Cornwall where we had a big family get together. Bloody good night that was and got to see members of the family I hadn't seen for years.

...when Princess Diana died?

Byron Heights, West Falkland Isles. A lot of people were upset at the time but I really couldn't care less. People die all the time. The only time I really care is when it's one of my own family or friends.

...when Jacko died?

Can't remember where I was but was surprised he lasted that long. He was seriously freaky/dodgy from the mid 90's onward.

...when ding-dong the Witch is dead?

Saw it on the news.

...during 9/11?

At home helping my ex-wife move into her flat.

At my mates house stoned.
In bed as she died in the very early hours, remember being really annoyed when the called off the Liverpool v Newcastle match.
On a plane to Egypt.
No idea.
Sat at home watching it unfold on the telly

In a pub called Vodka Revolution (now called Revolución de Cuba). It was their opening night. Paul and Joel from Neighbours were in there. They must have been doing Panto in Sheffield.

In the garden with two bits of paper, one of them with a hole in it.

...the Millennium?
Bit blurry, probably a house party. Would have been 16 at the time.

...when Princess Diana died?
I remember walking down the stairs after having a long lie and my Mum told me she was dead. Didn't really sink in at first and spent the rest of the day watching the news.

...when Jacko died?
On the crapper reading BBC news app.

...when ding-dong the Witch is dead?
This event was not recorded in my brain.

...during 9/11?
This was a strange day. I was at Uni studying multimedia technology. That morning from 9am GMT, we were looking at the wonders of webcams and how they worked. The lecturer showed us some examples of cams from around the world and left us to find more. So my mate and I were looking at different cities across the the world and found loads in New York, with one on top of the twin towers, it was still dark so didn't really see much apart from lights... we then got bored and started talking about the FBI's most wanted list. I remember looking at their top 10 most wanted and reading about why they were wanted. I believe Mr Osama was around number 8 in their list. Went the rest of the day in lectures and left early due to free time. Got home and my Mum told me the twin towers had been hit and fallen down. I didn't believe her, I was on their web cam this morning after all. It was only when I watched the news did I realise the extent of the attack.

Spent the next few weeks paranoid that the FBI would somehow link our activities from that day and question us. lol.

...during the 1999 eclipse?
Outside using a welders mask to view it...remembering now how dark and cooler it got...even the birds stopped singing!

Was watching Crimson Tide on video...paused it to go do something....took longer than expected so when I came back, video had auto stopped so terrestrial tv was on actually though it was a trailer for a new movie, took about 10 seconds for me to realise what I was seeing and then saw that 2nd plane hit live and both towers collapse...still remember to this day the chill it sent down my spine! I then continued to watch the live reports all day.

...during 9/11?

In a meeting with my team in the north west. Secretary bought me a coffee and said "looks like a small plane has crashed into a sky scraper in NY" and the rest is history. Called the meeting off and we sat and listened in shock.

However this was more memorable...

Laying in bed one morning around Christmas time I think. Kept hearing a helicopter going over 4 or 5 times. Looked out my window to see a yellow Sea King going in circles, which is odd being that we are about as far from the coast you can get. Anyway put the TV on in the bedroom and there is a story about a plane crash in Staffordshire, 2 people dead after 2 planes hit one another. Long story short but this was 350-400 yards from the bottom of my garden! When Sky News started to interview the farmer who owns the fields at the bottom of my garden we got up :D

1999 Eclipse - at work.

Millenium - Getting trampled on Kingsway trying to first get to, then get away from, display along embankment.

Princess Di - in bed watching "Tour of Duty" when the newsflash came on. Must have been about 2am.

Jacko - in Liverpool street station, well oiled, when I saw the news on the big screen in there. Dunno if that was when he actually died.

Maggie - no idea. Can't remember.

WTC - at work, murmurs of a plane accidentally hitting a skyscraper in new york started buzzing around the office, people making jokes about how could such an idiot pilot hit something as obvious as a skyscraper etc. Within minutes everyone had BBC news on their screens. There was an audible gasp throughout the office (of about 500 people) when the second plane struck.

#1 Outside, watched through some welding goggles

#2 A rather dismal party at the local pub. Everybody had caught flu so hardly anybody showed up.

#3 I got up and my parents said to me "Diana's been killed in a car crash". My first and immediate response "That is a bit convenient isn't it?"

#4 Meh, He clearly had a talent, but he was also seriously screwed up (Poor chap) This site http://anomalies-unlimited.com/Jackson.html puts it better than I ever could (It is however quite old and has not been updated for more, erm, recent events)

#5 My main recollection is the confirmation of what I had always already known (yet again). That "Lefties" are a bitter and spiteful bunch and therefore best avoided!

#6 Didnt see the first tower go down, but a friend phoned me and I put the TV on in time to see the second! At the time I was gobsmacked. I thought to myself "I have just seen 20,000 people die on live TV"

When the final toll came to "Only" 3000 my though was that they had actually got off lightly.

Had the attack been later in the day (and had the attackers crashed the aircraft lower down) the toll could easily have been in the tens of thousands.

Eclipse - dunno

Millennium - big house party in the countryside, bouncy castle, girls dressed as hookers etc... (pimps and hos theme)

people's princess - can't remember I think at breakfast or on the way to school on the radio but later on teachers in school were offering counseling etc.. to pupils, thought it was so weird at the time - wasn't like anyone actually knew her personally - just another celebrity
fortunately at least some of the guys were telling princess Diana death jokes to break the monotony of girls getting upset about it and the utter garbage in the tabloids and on TV in the following weeks

wacko Jacko - in flat watching TV, flatmates were distraught, guy was a nonce and generally quite weird, didn't really care

Maggie - can't remember

911 - in a barber shop

...during the 1999 eclipse?
Can't remember, possibly in Cyprus, definitely not in UK or I'd have captured it somehow.
...the Millennium?
In London.
...when Princess Diana died?
I was abroad most probably.
...when Jacko died?
In the UK, just a regular day.
...when ding-dong the Witch is dead?
I think I was in Maylasia
...during 9/11?
At an airport in Nice returning from a business trip, boarding a plane, and the news popped up with live images whilst in the queue... can't say the timing was particularly reassuring. Amazingly we had no delays landing at LGW.

I think that is a crash that a person I knew "Rodders" died in. He was the pilot. Could be wrong but the story sounds very familiar. How wierd.

At work.
...the Millennium?
North bank drinking till 3am with an ex-girlfriend and then ended up at a boozer in Wimbledon at 7am with a plateful of chips.
...when Princess Diana died?
Flying back from Ibiza; landed and wondered what the deal was with classical music on every radio station.
...when Jacko died?
In Hatfield attending a work meeting.
...when ding-dong the Witch is dead?
No idea.
...during 9/11?
At work and watching all the updates coming in via IRC. Watching the second plane fly into the south tower live was surreal. I flew out to the states on the 15th; it was pandemonium.

...during the 1999 eclipse? Working at Dewhursts butchers in Derby city center. We all went ouside to have a look and had the glasses for our eyes. It went very cold.
...the Millennium? Nottingham I think with a few mates.
...when Princess Diana died? At a flat I rented with my mates. I didn't beleive it at first.

...during 9/11? At work. I finished early in the day and watched the news when I got home all day long. Oh and to quote above post, surreal isnt the word... I was like, mouth wide open and gobsmacked.

Neither of them were a Rodney, not that this means anything. I live on the banks of a reservoir and on the other side about 800 yards as the crow flies is a small airfield used by mainly farmers and 3 or 4 local pilots. On the morning two local chaps in their 60's took off and tragically ascended into another aircraft that was about to drop a load of skydivers! That plane was damaged too but amazingly all of the sky divers jumped out and the pilot did an emergency landing at East Midlands airport. Tragic event really, the plane that bought it lost a fair chunk of rear end and simply spiralled down into they ground, the stood no chance and frankly a few seconds difference, few yards to the right and it could have been in my house. :(
