Why are people so invested in the lives of random Internet people, especially when the lives of the people could be the work of fantasy?

A better question is, does anyone here really care about anyone else here. I have long suspected not.

Care might be a stretch, although my wife would often call me a sociopath :p

A curiosity though certainly. Many of us have been on here for much of our lives and i would almost say it'd be unusual not to be interested in someone you've been in contact with for >15 years. The very fact that these kind of threads appear on a fairly regular basis proves that point.

This is a long-standing forum, with some of us being on here for 20-odd years.

It's like a long running soap opera. You get to know, cherish and nurture your characters :-)

I hope so, I know I certainly do.
Same. I might not know some people in depth but know of their struggles and successes and its often nice to follow them to their outcomes. Thankfully many are positive.
There are members who I've seen move from just starting work who now have established careers and have moved in to their first homes etc. It's great to see.
Others have moved on from driving amazing cars like Polo's to pieces of trash that just don't compare. They have my sympathies.

I wouldn't describe it as being invested; it's been noticed that a regular poster hasn't been seen for a wee while. Nothing more than that.

Honestly, I do. Not in the same way I'd care about a friend or family member of course. But after being here so long and getting to "know" people I do care what happens to them. It's a community here.

In the grand scheme of things, I'm very much a newbie here and not in the clique but I care about peoples wellbeing at the least. There are a fair few posters on here who I think are probably quite sound in real life and the community, while it can be a bit marmite at times, has some really good people on here who always are willing to help. When people are friendly to you it's only natural to wonder about them, I would've thought anyway.

On other forums I've visited/left I've remained in contact with some of the other forum members. I have a whatsapp group where I talk to them daily and truly count them as friends. But that's normal if you've been speaking to someone for near enough 20 years.

Very much this - I don't know anyone personally from here, but I do feel an interest in some people.
