Which Console To Choose

Hang on, a video is best?

"If nothing else you can get an oppion of the games, and see how they run, play. Look at how many people got happy over the GoW videos for an example."

How do they give you an opinion? Or show how the game really runs for that matter, they can be edited, rigged etc. Very often they aren't even being played properly, just 'the best bits' shown.

Reviews aren't ideal, yes, loads are bought, big deal. The point is that if you check various sources and look at the average you mostly avoid that.

See i disagree - but then i hate reviews; some games have been reviewed awfully yet ive loved them; some have had awesome reviews and ive hated them. Personally i find reviews pointless - and go by my own judgements.

Duh! Oh course going by your own judgement is best, but then if the console nor the game is out, then what choice do you have? As I said, ... short of playing it ...

So i wait for a demo, someone else to have the game or rent it.

Simple really

To play online you will only need a Router. If you buy a wireless one and buy the wireless adapter for the Xbox360 you can play games wirelessly over the Internet. You won't need a second line.

Thats good I already have a wireless router, so all I would need is a wireless adapter for my 360 and I can play online, would this be at an extra cost ? my internet at the moment is unlimated connection and on 24/7.

QUOTE=Chrisss]As for the prices, have a look around the forums, you'll be able to get hold of a Premium for less than 250. I'd recommend against a Japanese console as I don't think all games are region free.[/QUOTE]

Cheers for that Chrisss, as for your comments about the Jap version if I buy my games from play-asia.com then they would be compatible they probaly also would be released earlier than in the UK so I would have them earlier aslo they are cheaper. What you guys think on this ?

You get 1 month of free gold play, then you have to pay between 20 - 40 pounds (depend how much you shop around) to get a gold pass for one year.

If you dont have gold, no online play, but you can still video conference people, talk via headset, download demos, videos and updates.

If you shop around though, you can get the Gold Subscription with a 1000 point card, to enable you to buy live arcade games and other context, or get a free copy of Halo 2 or PGR2.

Apart from that, yep, thats it.

With the 360, you'll be paying an extra £50-60 on top to get the USB WiFi adapter, which is a little pricey, but is worth it if you are going to be using it a lot. It'll cost you around £25-35 a year for Xbox Live Gold depending upon where you buy a 12 month card from, but it'll get cheaper and cheaper as the years go on. You wont have to pay anything for Xbox Live Silver, which you can download anything on, just can't play games online.

The PS3 on the otherhand has a built in WiFi adapter (on the 60GB version, not on 20GB). The online service is apparently fee to play on, but you'll have to pay for downloading things like demos and videos.

Even with online options, the 360 is a lot cheaper than the PS3. The 360 only becomes more expensive than the PS3 if you want to play any sort of new high definition optical content, so the HD-DVD drive will cost you £130 for the 360, but the PS3 will have Blu-Ray built in from the start. The 360 will only ever be more expensive than the PS3 if you want to do absolutely everything, and the advantage the 360 has is that you can buy what you want, instead of with the PS3, you have to buy everything in the single package.

I think you can pick up a 3rd party wireless bridge which acts in the same way as the wireless adapter but does the same job and works out a lot cheaper.

And a year long Live subscription package can be picked up for about 19.99 now along with a free game.

Or buy a vision camera from the start. MS do a package of the camera + 12 months gold + 200 MS points + UNO + Totemball + Robotron for £49.99.

Granted though i prefer a lot more Single Player stuff to multiplayer so Live isnt a sole reason, but the games out currently do look fantastic, and yea the PS3 may be more powerful, but how much more power do you need?? If they can pull of games like GoW then i dont care.

Im also not interested in the PS3 exlcusive, GT, MGS4 etc.. they dont interest me - if they manage to nab Ninja Gaiden 2 (unlikely) then i would buy a PS3 purely for that game, until then - im not bothered.

Yeah and how much more powerfull did we need than the SNES, Mega Drive,N64,PS, PS2, xbox..........
I still think the lifespan of the 360 is only 3 years, and the PS3 is a good 5-6. MS want to keep selling upgrades, whereas Sony want the initial investment.

I honestly wouldn't rule out Ninja Gaiden 2 going to the PS3, with Ninja Gaiden getting reworked for the PS3 and Team Ninja not confirming anything about NG2, they might be trying to see who they can squeeze the most out of

Going back to OP:
Do you know anyone with an Xbox 360? I'd say try one, and if you like it, go for it!

If you don't want to spend the money on the Xbox 360, then consider the Wii, it may not have fancy graphics, but by all accounts the gameplay will more than make up for it :D

My money is on PS3 being released September 2007 in the UK, June 2007 at best, so either console would keep you going till then.

If Sony dont hit March then they wont release it during the summer, it would be suicide, Summer holiday, going out all night to bbqs etc or a PS3 :p

I was looking into getting a new console for xmas I currently own a PS2, I was wondering if your guys could give me some advice on which would be the best console to buy thats going to be out by xmas or waiting until the PS3 which I think is due out early next year, could you also state a brief reason why you think it is worth choosing one console over the other so I can kind of weight up the pro`s & cons between each one.

Also how do I get internet access via a console I currently have access to the net through my PC via Telewest Blueyonder, is it as sinple as buying a splitter and running an extra cable to the console or do I have to pay Telewest for a second line.

To answer the second part (I don't think it has been answered so far) regarding having more than one PC / Console online at once :

You'll need to get something like a router (I use a Linksys Wireless router WRT54g - from memory) and then run your devices from there.

I have a few PC's plugged into the router (wired) and run a few other devices wirelessly for example my 360 connects wirelessly using the MS adapter and my Laptop is also connected wirelessly.

As for which console - I have a Gamecube, PS2, (2) Xbox(es) and a 360 and a Wii on pre-order.
The reason that I have so many is for the different types of gaming that my family indulge in.

GC - kids games like Donkey Konga, great fun.
PS2 - Eye Toy games and Guitar Hero.
Xboxes - not used much for actual gaming but are good bits of hardware.
360 - For my gaming and it is really very, very, very good. Online capabilities are what make it so good for me.
Wii - I am expecting this to offer novel gaming and some great family gaming.

So as to which to console to get I would say it depends on what type of gaming you want to have, I expect the Wii to be more casual and family fun, great after the pub etc but I might be suprised by the new control methods.
Hard to recommend it above the 360 because I haven't played on it.

I can definitely recommend the 360 because I have one and it is very good, but not something that I can play much when the kids are up as most of my games involve graphical brutality. So far it seems to excel at FPS and Racing games but doesn't offer much in the way of family orientated amusement apart from the arcade area which is great.

The PS3 is not released yet and can be a long ways off so again how do you recommend something that you've not played on.

I don't think that I am likely to use the GC again once the Wii arrives and if MS release some decent eyetoy type games and Guitar Hero then the PS2 is going to go in the loft with the GC I guess. All in I think that the 360 and the Wii will suffice to give me the range of gaming I want from gory bloody FPS right through to family fun games with guitars and eyetoys.

If the Wii60 combo is as good as I expect it to be I won't bother getting the PS3 unless the PS3 offers something significantly better that the others haven't got between them.

So my advice ........ Wait until the Xmas holidays start. By then the Wii will have been out a couple of weeks and you'll have a better idea as to if it is any good. If you're not sure at that point wait until the January sales hopefully there'll be some good deals on. Just remember there is no rush and if you can only afford one at the moment then wait until you can make a more informed choice. Bear in mind that if you want to share your net connection (assuming you don't have an old machine to hook up and use as a router) then you can expect to spend about £100 to get a wireless router and the official MS 360 wireless adapter. For me the 360 is still good without a net connection but better with one.

/edit : Doh - just realised I missed an entire page of replies when reading through.
