Which distro for a Linux beginner?

I put ubuntu on a partiton the other day out of curiosity really.
Was pretty darn easy to do and everything seems to work nicely out of the box.
I like how clean and simple it all looks and have been using it a bit more than windows last few days, mainly as I have work to do so don't have all the distractions of my windows boot :p

Got to say I was pleasently surprised by it all though and I really like the font it uses as standard much easier on the eyes.
Haven't really found anything I can't do yet but then again I don't even know what most of the features in linux do, especially when it comes to that terminal. I have absolutely no idea where to start with that and some of the installation instructions had me scratching my head!

I like the look of that Linux mint so might put that on a diff hard drive and give that a bash also, luckily I have no work or anything important saved on Ubuntu at the mo but does Mint have the cloud as well? So I could just place stuff in that if I wanted, install Mint and then gain documents back? I have no need to do so was just wondering, its a neat feature!

You mean Ubuntu One? - No

But you could use Dropbox for a small amount of stuff free - it's cross platform and you can even access from a smartphone etc

It's in Mint's Software manager so easy to install

Yes there is a Ubuntu One app for android, I found it earlier.

I have switched to Mint now trying this out, took some messing to get things sorted but it seems good now. Still getting to grips with the whole Linux thing. I will stick with it though :)

I'm new to linux and have been using the latest mint (not KDE) on my netbook for a few weeks now. No problems thus far that google, sorry, duck duck go hasn't fixed :)

It seems like a very good alternative to windows as far as netbooks go at least.

My friend hasn't broken my installation of Lubuntu yet, which is amazing since he is not computer literate and usually manages to completely wreck all my best efforts at creating an idiot proof user environment.

Once it is up and running it is very stable and fast. :)

Just installed Ubuntu as my first go at Linux because my windows install is getting bloated and slow.

Wasn't exactly painless. First it couldn't find a root drive to install on, which took hours to sort out.

Then I had to manually tweak and compile a set of wireless drivers to get my usb dongle working. Lots of terminal action required etc on that one.

Then chrome wouldn't install so I had to do it the "terminal way" instead of the software centre.

Not too impressed that I've had to do all that but I'll give it a fair chance and now it's set up hopefully there won't be any more problems.

The UI is... interesting what with the fiddly scroll bars, orange everywhere, etc. Off to Google again to see if I can tweak it a bit!
