Which guitar amp

Okay, just saw this on ebay:

MARSHALL JCM2000 DSL50 HEAD AND 1936 2X12 CAB

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MARSHALL-JCM2...401047462QQcategoryZ10171QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Current price £200 and a B.I.N od £425, is it worth it? I'd have to add on nearly forty quid in petrol to go pick it up but it still seems a bargain seeing as the DSL50 head is >£500 on it's own?

Oh, and what are the differences/benefits of TSL over DSL?

Hmm yeah might be a good deal if you want a cab and head. My marshall upgrade route went from an mg50 to an avt to dsl 401. There's a massive difference between each of those amps, and now i've heard valves i'm never going digital again!

There is a 401 for sale now too, not much cheaper though so far.

I haven't looked at the auction but yes that's a great price.

And by the way you should be able to get a TSL602 for around the £400 mark, I sold my TSL601 for £350 in mint condition a few months ago on ebay which was what I was expecting for it really.

Marshall AVTH anyday, unless as the others have stated, you want to go second hand. However, even though the DSL and TSL's may look better on paper, in the second hand marker with valve amps you have to be really careful. Firstly, you dont necessarily know the age and conditions of the Valves, especially in the TSL and DSL that have a large amount of them. If one goes your boogered and it is a complete pain in the arse having to buy new tubes all the time as they blow. With a brand new AVT you instantly know what condition it is in plus you get a warrenty.

All up to you mate, but from my own experience, buying first hand is definitely wiser than second hand in the valve amp market.

i cba to read through all these posts, but i can definatly reccomend the Line6 SpiderII HD head + stack. i use the 112 combo but have played through the HD stack and can say it was awsome :D ;) you got all the effects on the amp and its really loud.. i cant comment on the others as i havnt played through them.

i say differently to that, i'd rather a nice worn in JCM800 any day!

Yea thats fine mate, as I said it is all preference, but I had a bad experience with TSL head bought second hand, when I was running 9 pedals and a soundgate through it for a small gig at school. Half way through some Joe Satriani tracks the amp died on me. :(

That's the risk you take with buying second hand.

There's plenty of ways to check valves and if some need replacing then it's not thatexpensive, if the amp's a couple of years old then you can always try and negotiate on the price. To re-valve my JSX it costs around £90 which isn't too bad.

if you're going to be using a pedal for distortion, the cleans on the Vox Valvetronix range (cloth grille, not the mesh ones) are second to none! ive been using mine now for nearly a year and i love it!

Funny i was just going to post on here to ask if anyone had a valvetronix. Have a Marshall MG100DFX and i just can't warm to it at all. Heard some of the sound bytes from the vox site and was suitably impressed so was maybe thinking of getting one. What is wrong with the new mesh ones? Anyone else have one of these. Also considering maybe just building my own valve amp.

the mesh ones arent as well made in all honesty, they also dont have as many different models in them.

if you can stretch it, definately go for a cloth grilled one.

i used mine for the first time in a band situation on saturday just gone at my uni, was only a practise but i was still wholly impressed with it.

i didnt think the gain on it was that impressive, but as soon as i started to up the volume on it (got it to around 7 on 2x15*) the gain starts to kick in a lot more!

*on the back of these amps is a switch for 2x1W, 2x15W, 2x30W, 2x60W - the reason for this is so you can overdrive the valve preamps but still keep the master volume low.

don't tempt me, boi!

just want to be able to get rid of my marshall...i'll die before i have another

Just noticed that the cloth grill ones your speaking about are the older models and are completely solid state. They use the Korg REMS circuit which i already have in my Korg AX1500G. The new Valvetronix range has a valve in the pre-amp much like the marshall valvestate. At what stage does the valve effect the sound more? Pre-amp or output?

Oh dear, just got a little trigger happy and ordered a Marshall Mode Four half stack, £920 including delivery

.. and added a new guitar to my collection too, don't tell the missus it cost £800 :p

I have an AD60 and it is a brilliant all round amp, can handle the more distorted tones very well but shines for clean stuff, especially the overdrive of the well-modelled AC30.
