My options:

Inspiron Mini 10 Approx £299

Advent 4211c Approx £279

Samsung NC10 Approx £300

MSI WIND Approx £270 (Looks like the Advent)

Acer Aspire One D150 Approx £299

Which one guys, and why? I want to keep costs down but prefer a 10" Netbook. So far, the MSI looks good. Can it be upgraded of ram? Easy?

Please help if you can.

Not on your list, but Lenovo S10e at around £260

Here is why i love it:
Panel access to hard drive and ram.
Super build quality.
Looks good, not a finger print magnet - all matt finish.
Great driver suppurt - auto upgrades all system components.
Great screen, LED backlit, bight and clear.
Good keyboard, easy to type even with big hands - no flex.

How much ram will it take?

Is it quiet?

Love my Lenovo, fan is annoying sometimes, build and finish is excellent. Could do with abigger battery

The Samsung was the preferred choice (I've not looked at these for a good few months so have things changed?).

I was more bothered at the time about the fit and finish over the battery life, plus I got a healthy discount from Lenovo so it turned it into a no brainer.

Lenovo s10e.

Is it upgradeable to 2g ram? Is 1gig soldered on? Can the drive be upgraded? What about fan noise? Thanks

Edit: Ruled out the Lenovo now. The ones below are the main contenders now:

Advent 4211c

Samsung NC10

MSI WIND

I saw the samsung nc10, and it just looks like a glossy toy, so i didnt go with that one. As for advent, well, thats just christmas cracker brand :) sorry, but ive seen too many fall apart.

The Lenovo has 512mb soldered onboard, and 1gb stick that you can replaced with a 2gb, so 2.5gb in total. If using xp you will only see 2gb, if using vista or windws 7, you will see 2.5gb.
It is quiet enough for me. I have a 9cell battery good for 9 hours from ebay, fantastic :) charge it every 5 days after using it every night, or you can go with a 6 cell, sticks out slightly less.

Well If it helps, I bought the 4211 for my kids. Actually not bad little machine for an Advent brand (but that is presumably because it is basically the same as the MSI Wind I think).

I have it running Ubuntu Netbook Remix plus XP in dual boot (also some people have mentioned they have theirs runing OSX with little to no probs). So if you like lots of different OS choices, it seems to be one of the better machines for that. It has reasonable build quality for a cheap machine, but not great (keyboard popped out when my daughter dropped it...easy to push back in though). Hard to compare with others as I don't own another netbook.

Now the down side...the battery life sucks bigtime IMHO! Typical use gets say 1:30 mins with wifi...which I think defeats the object of having such a portable laptop. Maybe newer ones have larger batteries though?

So depending on what you want to do with it, if you want to do OS experiments, Wind/Advent is not a bad choice. But if you go down this route, I would recommend splashing out on a bigger battery for it (or else be prepared to be jealous of all the NC10 (and other brand) owners with their crazy 5+ hours of usage!

Hope that helps ya matey.

Waw! So much info. Still undecided.

I quite like the look of the Advent 4211c. It is a Wind rebadged so should be good quality. Then again, i like the Lenovo S10e but not sure as i have not heard of the name. NC10 is nice too but a bit more expensive!!

Lenovo took over IBM's laptop business.

I have a NC10 and love it.

Spec fitted what I wanted, and its a great netbook. Just take a look at the large thread here, should convince you ;)
