Which Protein powder?

You won't gain muscle from protein powder. That'll be down to your exercise, recovery and diet. If you're lacking in protein in your diet then yes it'll help boost your protein intake. However it is not special it is just protein. For a cheap boost in extra nutrition it is great as well as convenience but if you can afford a decent diet without them you won't be losing out.

Listen to this guy.

Sort your diet first, then you'll know if it's actually needed or you're just pooping money down the drain.

Protein powder is useful to speed recovery when you can't quickly have a good meal but it is also somewhat overrated in importance, carbohydrates are the most important thing to recover as soon as you have finished exercising. Luckily carbs are much easier to consume post exercise when in a hurry, some pre-made honey sandwiches and a banana etc. I'll have a scoop of protein powder + 1 shot espresso in a large glass of milk after a heavy exercise session, e.g. yesterday I did 22m run which does a lot of damage to the muscles. I had the time to fry up some bacon and eggs, yum, and had several slices of toast with Nuttella. Later on a big bowl of ice cream, which is actually pretty good with a lot of simple carbs, some fat and protein.

The Protein Works is popular on here and on the FB group. They have a decent number of flavours and the protein rates pretty highly among its competitors in lab tests

Go for their Whey 80 Concentrate, it's the best value and is just your standard whey that you'd get whether it's branded or not.

If you use TS6642 when registering, you'll get a free bag of protein as well if you fancies trying a different flavour. I recommend Cherry Bakewell or Lemon Shortcake

I normally have a protein shake just after a worked and in the morning.. just to help combat catabolism.

Just standard Whey Protein from MyProtein is fine.. or the cheapest you can find.. Don't go for the overpriced consumer products that promise you the world...only hard work and dedication achieves your goals.

DP I agree carbs are important, but protein (amino acids) is also vital in repairing your muscles - carbs and protein together actually work best owing to the insulin spike acting as a catalyst for muscle repair - it's an anabolic hormone after all. :)

That said there is no anabolic window, or catabolism window after a workout. Sure, Cortisol is produces which is catabolic, but gluconeogensis is a slow process - waiting an hour or two for a meal won't do you any harm. That said, if you're struggling to get your nutrition right through regular diets, shakes etc... are an easy fix. However, I'd still recommend trying to sort your lifestyle/diet out first.

hi guys thanks for your replies! :) just want to clarify my diet and my exercising are on point. I am however struggling to gain weight for some reason. I do a lot of cardio alongside my strength building so maybe that is why its stagnating. I am hovering at exactly the 70kg point but i just want to slowly build that up to 74-75kg within the next 3 months

I agree but it mostly comes down to the simple fact that the quicker you start consuming protein + carbs the sooner your body can start recovering and the more recovered you will be before the next training session. It takes 24-48 hours to fully restock glycogen for example. If you train most days then prompt intake of carbs+protein increases recovery and training ability the next day, this is well observed in scientific studies. If you don't train back-to-back then it makes little difference.

How long after? If its any more than 3 minutes after your final rep you've already lost all your gains from that workout anyway so you're just peeing money away by drinking a protein shake.

I would see a doctor if you have protein in your urine, liekly very serious kidney disease.

Sounds as though you're just not eating enough calories. Protein alone won't help much as it is not that calorie dense and satiates appetite.

Very usefully reminded me to check my order. They were out of Lemon Shortcake so went Vanilla Creme for the 250g freebie. Unfortunately I forget to select a flavour for the main bag :o

Thankfully it has not shipped yet so I have dropped an email and hope they will be able to update the order.

I use the MyProtein stuff, 25g with 150ml of milk in the morning pre cycle to work and then in the evening if I've been at the gym

Chocolate was OK, took a bit of getting used to. Chocolate caramel is much nicer.
