Whiskey

Black & White:

How come you can buy it in Scotland, but it's against the law in England & Wales.

As a bit of a thread revival.. I have ran out of both money and whiskey so had to settle for what was in the garage. It was a cheapy bottle of Whyte & Mackay... don't drink it. Enough said, I feel.

It's one of those whiskies that I wouldn't buy - but if someone hands me a glass of it, I'll drink it - I've tasted a lot worse.

Stan :)

I dunno... had half the bottle... still tastes like pee! Better than glenfiddich, mind you. Actually, possibly... hmm....

Firstly.....

I've not read all this thread but im drinking some Glenfiddich Caoran Reserve just now and its great.

Mmm.... yes, Islays are my favourites too. Currently working my way through a bottle of Laphroaig and it's divine, but I'd probably pick a Lagavulin over it most days tbh! I recently tried Isle of Jura and it was also very nice - I don't think I've ever tasted another whiskey quite like it: it was very sweet without being cloyingly so - almost like good dark chocolate I guess... (you can tell I'm not up-to-date with the proper taster's terminology :p)

I understand the Southern Comfort confusion but could someone explain why Jack Daniels is not considered whiskey by some of you?
I don't think anyone said it's not technically a whiskey, it's just that talking about it in a thread about single malts is like posting a picture of your Game&Watch in a thread about people's high-spec gaming PCs! :p

Actually, scrap that comparison: some of those Game&Watch things were actually fun despite being low-tech - it's more like praising Morissons brand instant coffee in a thread where someone's describing their new £450 espresso machine and the £25 an ounce coffee beans they got to use in it!

Actually, there's an even simpler way to explain it: Bourbon smells like a diabetic's pee and tastes of rotten onions.

OK so I decided to buy a bottle of Whisky tonight!

I remembered Balvenie Double Wood being highly recommended, so I went straight for the booze aisle to find none in! There was a ticket for it, just no DW. So, refusing to leave empty handed I went for the Balvenie Founder's Reserve :D

On first taste I love it! Has a lovely spicy taste to it and the aftertaste lasts ages! The last "whisky" I had was a Southern Comfort and that's just a brief moment of fire and that's it. This Founder's Reserve keeps your whole mouth entertained long after you've swallowed... I can see a glass lasting a long time! :)

According to the stuff that came with the bottle there should be a honey sweetness to the taste, unfortunately I can't really pick that up. I can smell it in there I'm sure, taste buds are saying otherwise. :p

Actually, now I think about it there IS something honey-like... I think maybe that spicy meat feast pizza I had has stunned most of my taste buds lol.

I will probably post back at a later time when I have time to myself and have had another glass or 3! ;)

Any idea from where? Asda doens't look like it has it...

Oddly enough, my local Sainsbury's keeps a good selection of Balvenie on its shelves. I looked after trying that 15 year old Single that bigstan brought down to the BBQ meet this year. That stuff is lovely... absolutely fantastic.

I looked in our drinks cabinet at home, and saw the only whisky we'd got was "Teachers". I even went so far as to try some. My god that was a mistake.

What a splendid way to describe the sensation

Don't worry if you don't taste it the same as it says on the bottle - that description is someone else's opinion of it and everybody tastes things slightly differently.

You're usually pretty safe with any Balvenie and Founder's reserve is an excellent whisky (haven't had that for a while actually).

Rinse your mouth out with pee quickly - it'll take the disgusting taste away ;)

That wouldn't have been too bad an idea. I suppose it wasn't attrocious. I could actually taste that it was whisky. I use the word 'was' deliberately there as I've no idea what it is now!

Just finished a nice bottle of Ale though this evening making me feel reaaaaallly mellow. Shepherd Neame's Late Red. Don't know what it is about certain drinks, some ales make me giggly, others make me so mellow and relaxed. Whisky almost always does the latter :)
Must buy a bottle of Balvenie from the offy some time soon and rinse out my whisky glass. At the rate I don't drink I imagine that'll keep me going quite a while :D

Laphroaig, I heard someone mention this.

By gum its good stuff mate out of pete bog somewhere off north of scotland or one of them islands they got up there. You can smell the pete bog in the whiskey aswell definatly an aquired taste but does go in the damned good catergory for drinks

Little thread revival for a heads-up.

Glen livet special offer (£18) runs out tomorrow at Tesco so get buying!

(also they've changed the packaging now.. it is a little leather box thing)

My dad used to work as a Supervisor for Teachers (ok, I know it's a dodgy blend). He was responsible for the smooth operation of the bottling plant and you would be surprised at the amount of single malts that passed through. Teachers also owned the Ballantines Distillery in Bumbarton and he was quite partial to some Inverleven which I believe was never released for public consumption here but was bottled for the Japanese market.

As for myself, I'm not a great lover of spirits and am more likely to be supping Hoegarden but I do have a soft spot for Glengoyne.

You will find that a lot of distilleries are owned by companies that blend. Seems a shame really as I imagine some of it could be pretty good.

Just getting to the last few drops of my Founder's Reserve so I may get myself to a Tesco tomorrow :D

On the recommendation of this thread i've bought a bottle of Glenlivet 12 y.o. I have no mineral water so am drinking it neat. However, I don't think I like it :(
When I drink it I don't like the taste. Well, that's a lie, I don't mind the taste but am not getting the flavours that this thread suggested I should be. The aftertaste is pretty lovely though.

What am I doing wrong? Is it a case of perseverance, like when drinking anything for the first time, or am I going to be stuck in the world of vodka forever?

Help me you whisky gods.
