Who has driven a supercar? Were you impressed?

I know many of us currently drive cars that are capable of what might be classed as supercar type performance so I was wondering who had driven a supercar, and how did it compare to other fast cars (but not supercars) that you'd driven? (ie modded Jap type motors or Cosworth powered Caterhams for instance)

The reason behind this is my choice of new car. Although I'm still set on getting a VX220 turbo I just thought I'd investigate 911s. On paper a stage 2 VXT is quicker to 100 than most 911's (I'm talking about the affordable "ordinary" 911's like a 1998 996 Carrera 2 , not the real monsters of course) but everyone I speak to raves about the performance of the ordinary 911s, how it's "real world fast". What is it about a supercar that makes people do that? It can't be down to performance as there are plenty of non-supercars with similar or even better performance. I'm sure most of us have seen various videos of turbo'd Corsas beating Ferraris for example.

A supercar is as much about the experience as the speed.
The noise, even the interior, some cars feel like a big even just to be sat in them! never mind driving them. Its not about speed its about enjoyment. and that differs with personality.

I aint driven a supercar but I would imagine when driving one you feel special. I'd rather drive a slower Ferrari then my MR2 as it would feel so much better. The whole image the car brings to you as you drive it would be great.

The whole OMG im driving a Ferrari would put a grin on my face all day. :D

I'm driving a 996 GT3 on sunday on track amongst others, I'll let you know ;)

Also back to back with an Exige S2 then passenger run in an M400 and F40.

Are you calling a 911 a supercar? I've never considered them to be anything more than a very capable sportscar which has the distinguishing feature that it's incredibly easy to live with on a day to day basis.

I wouldn't class a standard 911 as a supercar. However I have a Porsche 944S2 and the car makes me grin from ear to ear. Not just about how fast it goes, but how you feel in every respect. From sitting in the car knowing your in a proper sportscar, to the power, to the handling, and the fact that most people stare at your car for the right reasons, too just little things like other road users seem to give you more respect, and just move out the way down motorways etc etc etc. I could go on for a while but I wont.

Me Me Me!!

I've driven the following:

DB7
TVR Chimera
Ferrari 355
Lister Jag XJS

(pics of some of them are here)

All of the above were via a classic & Sports car club that i was a member of a few years ago - i.e. pay a membership/yearly fee, borrow the cars for a weekend (how much you pay dictates how many weekends you got).

Of them all i suppose the 355 summed up the supercar experience - for a start it's a real "event" to drive it, you know that you are in something special. And it is shockingly quick in every situation, be it off the line or just overtaking someone - the paper differences between that and the RS (for example) are not that vast, but when driving it it really is a completely different level.

For me it's about the speed and the noise.

When I first got the mr2 turbo I thought it was pretty quick. 1/4 mile in 13 dead and 0-60 in 4.7. Now it's modded it is imho a supercar. The noise from the turbo is immense and the difference in speed is phenomenal. Any car that can do 0-60 in under 4seconds is a supercar imho. Has to look nice aswell tho ;) I've driven a 355 and tbh I wasn't "that" impressed, sure the noise is awesome but I just felt like someone with a rather small package in a car that was reasonably quick but not quick quick :D

Only thing ive driven which is close to a supercar is a marcos mantis, that was testicaltacular!

:scratchchin: Al's F40 at Vmax?

Only 400bhp+ thing I've driven for longer than moving it in a car park was an RS6 and that was great fun. Didn't feel much different to my A3 until you put your foot down though. It's not a supercar either.

Nothing really classed as a supercar :( Don't know any rich people.

Driven a Prodrive Scooby which didn't really do much for me. Fastest thing I've driven would be the car we built at uni a few years ago. That was awesomely fast and your only inches off the floor.

My sister had a passenger ride in a DB7 once.

the 911 is not only a design icon but also voted the best sportscar in the world ever last autumn.

a 996 carrera 2 (3.4) will make 0-60 in about 4.5 seconds, have a top end of around 180, faster than a lot of supercars, will aslo outhandle almost anything on the roads once you know how to drive it and is very relaible and can live with it everyday.

spares are actually quite reasonable for them too(the water cooled 911 that is), compared to say an alfa they are cheap ;)

tyres can be expensive, 285's on the rears :O

but over a vauxhall lotus the 911 will win hands down everytime on looks, handling, acceleration, top speed, ease of living with, and fuel consumption (im getting 33mpg from mine if I take it steady)

go take a test drive in a 996 before going near the vxr, then you will know what im talking about.

if you want a 996 you can even get a porsche warranty for it up to 125k miles or 10 years old, all this for 725 pounds . . . . . no other manufacturer is so confident their cars are reliable, BMW for example are 2 grand for a M3 extended warranty and thats a maximum of 5 years 70k miles . . . . . . . . . .

try the 996 im sure you will love it.

and yes ive driven a few supercars, the 911 was the best choice.

and will hold its value more than the vauxhall, man I cant even believe were comparing here. . . . . the 911 hold their value more than any other mass produced sports car.

tell me what you think when you get to take one for a spin.

Don't know who Al is, this one is owned by someone else.

At 23 years old you are doing well for yourself ;)

I say the whole image, it kinda binds to you. I have sadly not driven a supercar :(

Am I the only one who thinks of Koenigseggs and Paganis when they think of Supercars?

911's are great cars but not supercars IMHO :)

No, i think of cars like that to.

TVR 12 speeds, Porsche Carrera GT, Ferraris, lamborghinis, Bugatti Veyron, Aston Martin Vanquish are cars that are Supercars IMO.

Porsche 911s are too mainstream to be a supercar, they are more of a sports car.

I dont know what you would class the Ariel Atom 2 as though :o

I've driven:

DB9
Vantage (the old twin supercharged V8 one, not the current one)
Jag XJ220

The DB9 was a dream to drive, steering that was light enough to make parking in London not too hard, but heavy enough that it felt good when being thrown around a corner. The engine was superb, lovely V12 sound when you gave it some right foot but very quiet when you were cruising. This has the only paddle shift gear box I like (not that I've driven many) and coupled with the looks make this, for me, the ultimate car.

The Vantage had a great sounding 6.3l V8 (as standard they had 5.3l lumps but could go back to the factory to be uprated) but the handing wasn't fantasic. If you went into a corner too fast you got masses of understeer but a jab of right boot could usually sort that out.

I didn't really push the XJ220 much because I'd been warned just how bad the brakes were. It didn't sound like a fast car and with all the dials and gauges it was quite cramped in the drivers seat.

That's kinda what I mean. If I'm driving a Ferrari and I put my foot down, I want to annihilate anything that gets in my way, not get left behind by an MR2 turbo or something.

I'd hate to be in my 911 one day, and some plastic VX leaves me for dead :D (although I'd like to be in my VX and leave a 911 for dead!!!)

Let me know how it goes Muncher :)
