My dad owns an 09 Mini First which I've been driving since I passed my test in October. Its good fun despite only having 75 BHP, although the only other car I can compare it to is my driving instructors diesel 206.
My partner owns a 11 plate Cooper S with HK stereo, panoramic roof efc. It's good fun but very detached in comparison and fwd'ey to my mx5 but I can see why people think they are fun if they don't have something genuinely sporty to compare it to
I've had one with 175bhp and an open diff and it was mental.
This has a Quaife ATB in it and should run around 140-160bhp (depends on how much boost I run when I get it to the rollers) so should be little bit more manageable.
To be honest if I was going back to the start I would probably build a 100bhp (or there abouts) 1380 N/A engine with a Specialist Components fuel injection kit, but I'm really looking forward to getting this going
I'm rebuilding mine after it's been off the road for a while. It originally had an auto but I'll be swapping the lot for a rover cooper spi engine and box. Also looking to save weight everywhere with various parts and bits stripped out.
MPI was more refined to drive but was a PITA if you wanted any more power. The SPI was quite easy to modify but reliability and refinement was quite poor. It's either carb's or fully mappable aftermarket injection for me from now on! (unless I find a nice standary mulberry red mini 40)
The only trouble I had with mine was emissions, which I put down to a LCB not having the lambda at the bottom of the three pipes and the auto box burnt out after 20k
My SPI had the lambda relocated to the Y-piece at the bottom of the LCB, it also had a stage 3 head and some 1.5roller tip rockers and the obligatory k&n filter. The fuel pressure was upped slightly to get the fuelling something like. I had a dyno printout for 92bhp at the flywheel for it.
The MPI had a few mods when I bought it. Could never get it to run right so returned it to standard with the exception of a K&n element and a cat back exhaust (more for looks).
I'm shortly to be coming back into the MINI fold.. my F56 Cooper S is being built sometime around now and i'm expecting delivery end of next month/early August time..

To say i'm excited is the understatement of the century!!
I've always been the kind of person put off by high mileage when buying a car. I'm looking at spending £5-6000 on a 2005 late with 60k miles.
Then I start looking at the ones with 100k plus between £2500-3000 and start to think it might make sense to go that route and run it for the next 2-3 years and assume zero resale. Sure my £6000 low mileage one is going to lose the same amount in 2-3 years.
Do the high mileage one suffer in anyway? I've driven a couple of older BMW's with high mileage and wouldn't hesitate with something like that but are the minis built equally as well?
I went with a 52 plate on 72k, apart from discs, pads, tyres, ball joints and bushes it's been great. More especially so now that I've replaced them all!
