No original Ronaldo as well, mental! He's the best footballer i've watched. Other than that, it would have to be Besty for me

Ronaldhino in his prime is also worth a mention. Albeit he became "bored" with football at times with fitness and commitment issues, at his best he would single handedly destroy teams for fun.

I was at a speech given by a confidence coach who had worked with ronaldhino and many other great stars (olympics, football, etc) and he went into depth about how ronaldhino thinks when he is on the ball and it was insane.

He used to know all of his team mates inside out. How good they were at controlling the ball. Whether they could handle a ball played high or at speed. How they liked the ball played to them. What foot they favoured and tried to get the ball to them in a way they would like to receive it. He also know how confident team mates were under pressure whether they could play a quick 1-2, etc and he would weight this all up within a split second before making a decision on what he would do. Pass or attempt a skill, etc.

it's that level of detail which makes a team player stand out compared to an individual talent, he had both in his locker.

Yeah, Ronaldinho as well...incredible player. And to think UTD argued over 3 million quid before he went to Barca.

Any list is going to be controversial. It's very hard to compare footballers, especially over generations.

Still, the list fails without Garrincha.

Any list that has beckenbauer in it, and no Garrincha and no John Charles isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

I hate these sort of lists, but the one posted was not really that good.

Anyway; Il Gigante Buono & Anjo de Pernas Tortas like Gilly mentioned are two of the finest footballers to ever grace a football pitch. Among many other players that are not included in the list :p.

No thread like this will ever get an agreement it's all to subjective and the list is always dominated by eye catching centre forwards because they grab the headlines and the eye. You only have to see how few mentions there have been for centre backs or goalkeepers in this thread already yet one dimensional goal scoreers like Muller and Van Basten (Both quaility players, don't kill me) get bigged up all over the place. The criteria is also impossible to tie down as no two players are really alike.

To answer the question though, I'd say Maradona nasty little git but single handedly one a world cup and propelled a less than fasionable club to the top in the same way.

If I was picking modern day I'd go Ronaldo (Non-Fat variety) he has been successfull at the very top over a number of years for multiple clubs in multiple countries and drags a mediocre Portugal side into the big tournaments.

I dislike these lists, as there are just so many good players. I agree though, these lists favour attacking players. It would be interesting to see a top five goalkeepers and a top ten; midfielders, defenders and forwards.

These lists also favour modern players, that is players that are either recently retired or ~playing~ / coming to the end of their career.

It would be interesting to see what players people would pick given the categories; goalkeepers (5), defenders (10), midfielders (10), forwards (10).

Anyone else thought that andy11 is affiliated with that site and just did a post and run to get more traffic to it?

My top in no specific order: Eusebio, Ronaldo, Zidane, maradona, pele, messi. I think if Ronaldo or messi can win a World Cup they should be top 3 but till then...although I feel sorry for Ronaldo, surrounded by average players in the national team

Number 1 Maradona though unlike the other players he didn't have world class players next to him both club and country and literally own games alone!

I honestly believe that the best footballers of today would absolutely run rings around those of years gone by. That's why you can't really compare.
Nowadays it's such a different animal and these guys are machines.

True. In absolute terms Messi is miles better than Maradona. Achievements are judged against your peers though.
