who is the best footballer of all time?

I honestly believe that the best footballers of today would absolutely run rings around those of years gone by. That's why you can't really compare.
Nowadays it's such a different animal and these guys are machines.

This is the problem. Looking at the highlights of old players you can see rubbish defending, poor fitness levels and crap goalkeeping all over the place.

At the same time, they we undoubtably superbly talented so if they had grown up in the modern game they would have been better than they were. I think its quite ridiculous when people say that players like Pele are betting than the top players of today.

Exactly, that's why it's so hard to come up with the definitive answer. Also why Pele is always touted as the best, because he scored so many goals.......well it was in the Brazilian league!

Messi better than maradona that's a joke. Imagine if maradona had xavi, iniesta and co. Next to him!!

Its not because he has those players around him, its what he is capable of with the ball at his feet. I have never seen anything of Maradona that comes close to what Messi is capable of.

Eh?

You must be a young lad then fez. Maradona was pure brilliance.

Only my opinion but best player of all time is Maradona. He is the only great to have achieved his greatness without any supporting cast that could be considered "world class" or near to that level to help him carry the work load.

Whenever someone nominates a best ever player they are inextricably linked with others in their team.

Pele, Garrincha, Jairzinho, Didi, Vava, Tostao, Rivelino etc.
Cruyff, Neeskens, Haan, Krol, Rep
Beckenbauer, Muller, Hoeness, Seeler, Meier, Vogts
Di Stefano, Puskas, Kopa, Gento
Best, Law, Charlton, Stiles
Platini, Tigana, Giresse
Gullit, Van Basten, Rijkaard, Baresi, Maldini
Zidane, Desailly, Thuram, Vieira, Lizarazu, Blanc, Deschamps
Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Villa

and so on. Playing with players who are world class/top quality makes it far easier for you to show your qualities and to win trophies to elevate your claim to being a true great. The great players named from above are also remembered for being in great teams that define their generation. Maradona was never in a great team but his teams achieved greatness by having him in the team.

Maradona was Argentina's and Napoli's only indisputable world class player so opposition teams could concentrate on one player and in Maradona's day they attempted to kick him out the game more often than not. He still was good enough to influence his team to the biggest titles.

I'm a fan of players that just keep on going and don't give up, are relentless in their play and do so at incredible speed, and the first player that comes to mind is Ronaldhino.

And to think of players who aren't those who put the ball in the net, Jimmy "Gentleman Jim" Dickinson. 845 club appearances and 48 England caps and was never booked or sent off. I can respect that, given in modern football most of the skill goes into screwing your opponent.

Another joke lol? Maradona could teach messi a few things lol. Maradona is without a doubt the worlds best ever

What beanie said is spot on. Eusebio is up there too. Eusebio and maradona are one of a kind. Eusebio similar to Ronaldo in terms of being a complete player and messi and maradona similar too the difference is these 2 Ronaldo and messi can't do what the other do that's win it alone. This shows for both their national teams. Messi has hardly done too much in this World Cup and I'm sorry to say he has world class players around him, mascherano, augers, higuain, di Maria, and etc... Ronaldo average players around him and couldn't do much and this is coming from a portuguese

Without a doubt? Yes, of course, that's why every thread on every forum runs for pages debating it.

When someone says "its what he is capable of with the ball at his feet. I have never seen anything of Maradona that comes close to what Messi is capable of." You have not watched football or have a clue about the game. You can discuss the worlds besr and etc but when its regarding what a player is capable with the ball no one has done what maradonna has.
