Who knows their highway code?

I'm going to say that you should stop at the sign. Turning left would be no different to turning left at any other red light. It may be safe to do so, but it's not your decision to make.

My reason is thus:

Assume the lane to the right of the yellow car is blocked for roadworks and so any oncoming traffic MUST turn right as they approach you (down the road to your left).

Say there is a queue of 20 cars behind you all wanting to turn left, so you all drive through the sign, while the light is at red. Meanwhile, traffic on the other direction approaches towards you through their green light, but the flow of traffic turning left blocks their exit through the lights.

It may seem fine for 1 car to 'run the sign', but if a big queue of cars all do the same, then it totally breaks the temporary road system. For that reason I think you should stop and if you 'run the sign' it's the same as turning left on red. Although I am entirely happy to accept there could be a huge difference legally.

I probably need a diagram.

I'd be confused at this situation. If it was busy, i'd wait at the sign, but if it was empty i'd just go round.

You would have to wait, oncoming traffic would assume right of way and make the turn without paying too much attention. The idea of the sign being placed there rather than past the junction suggests such.

This is exact scenario is near my rents. I seen it as purely to stop traffic blocking the entrance to a street, so ignored the sign and turned left.

Applied common sense. Is there an actual answer to this?

Edit - seems I was in the wrong?

Yes. The sign performs the same function as a stop line and it's before the left turn.

Is there anywhere in the UK where there is a stop line for a traffic light painted before a junction not controlled by the traffic light?

ie - is the legislation not designed for bone-headed sign location? If its there to replace a stop line then perhaps it shouldn't be placed with 'letting people into the side turning' in mind, as stop lines for traffic lights are not.

I would see it as equivalent to a stop line at a regular set of lights and so I wouldn't pass the point of the sign if the red light was showing.

For the same reason a "Give Way" sign is the only inverted triangle sign !

ie:

If the sign gets plastered with anything that covers the front you will still know what the sign says due to its shape or inversion !!

Now then....

How many types of pedestrian crossings are there ?

(I've not long done my yearly CPC course !!)

I believe the stop sign and give way sign shape is pretty much universal around the world too, with the intent you will know what it means wherever you are in the world and whatever language is on it.

If the road was clear then I'd probably be cheeky and just make the turn, but otherwise I would wait at a red light, like you're supposed to :p

Are you required to stop by Regulation 36 if you are turning left at that junction?

The fact of the matter is, the lights and the sign would not be set up like that.

A 3 way set would be in place with both the lights and the sign positioned before the junction.

So the question is nonsense as the situation would not arise, to prevent these kinds of problems of people not understanding the road works.

I would assume that the reason it's there is two fold. One, to stop people blocking the junction, which leads to 2) If the light is red, but traffic is oncoming, it technically has right of way to turn right into that junction. Therefore, unless it was clear or safe to do so, I'd probably wait
