Who owns a Mondeo ST220 / ST TDCI?

Good comparison and info, thanks. It all sounds about right - the BMW is likely to feel like a higher quality product, but then that's what it is :p

I don't think I'd really reap the benefits though and yes like you said I didn't buy a bottom of the market model (although it was 6.5k 3 years ago so hardly hugely overpriced) and I know its condition and it is in excellent condition still.

Still, tis always interesting to compare :)

I'd broadly agree with his comments. As you know in 2006 my shortlist was 2-3 year old ST220 or 3-5 year old 530i Sport. I drove both, really liked both but felt the 530i was the better car so purchased on that basis. I was at the time a huge Mondeo fanboy as everyone on here knows, so there was no bias at play.

7 years later I have absolutely no regrets and I have this feeling that had I gone for the ST220 it wouldn't have still felt quite so fresh and rattle free as the E39 does now.

I also doubt it would have gone wrong like the E39, either :p

Now, If I didn't have the Mondeo, I'd probably buy an E39 and just fix it when it breaks but for me I think it's too much of a sideways step to warrant doing. :)

My Mondeo still feels as fresh as when I bought it, but then I have mechanical sympathy and am pretty fastidious when it comes to fixing things, i.e. I'm replacing a front brake caliper this weekend because it's binding, not in a way that most people would probably even notice but it still bugs me so it's getting done :p

The brake rattle (sqeak) is becoming unbearable on my car. Having the windows down, it is all i can hear.

Only need a bit of copper grease on but i have been putting it off till i get some new disks and pads along with painting the callipers.

Might have to be my Saturday job as it is sending me loopy!

Well is it a rattle or a squeek? :p

Squealing when you brake (not all the time I assume) usually just means everything needs to come off and be thoroughly cleaned up. Spend a bit of time doing this and put a little bit of copper grease on the back of the pads where they meet the piston, and in the bits where they slide in the carriers and this should sort it

My passenger mirror was once a bit reluctant to move electrically. I mashed the mirror a bit with my fingers and made it move and now it moves better ;)

That's not a very technical solution though I'm afraid..

I'm still trying to track down an incredibly annoying rattle on mine emanating from what sounds like to be behind the dashboard/below the windscreen. It does it while driving along normally, and you can make it click/creak by shaking the car gently from side to side with the steering wheel while driving.

It sounds like plastic rubbing on plastic and it sounds like it's coming from toward the passenger side and probably underneath at the back of the dashboard. But as is usually the case with these noises, I could be completely wrong.

I've had the glovebox out and been under there and had a poke around as much as humanly possible and taped up loose bits of wire and sprayed bits with silicone grease and all sorts.

The centre vent (with the little round climate control sun-load sensor in) creaks a bit when touched but grabbing hold of it or moving it doesn't stop or affect the rattle.

I did think it might be something 'external' and I've had a look at the springs and they seem fine. It sounds like plastic on plastic rubbing, not like the metallic rattle I could hear through the dash when my brake pads were rattling. I haven't taken out the wheel arch linings and looked behind them yet. I'm slowly working my way round dismantling the entire car :D

My latest thinking is it *might* be something like an ARB drop link (they're made of plastic) or a suspension top mount, but I'm not so sure.

Driving me potty though and I will get to the bottom of it!

Connectors behind the radio maybe?
Nope!

Just cleaned the underside best I can without degreaser, there were no visible oil spots on the road and the oil level hasn't moved so if it is in fact leaking it I don't think its much.

I went to start it to check for visible leaks and its dead once again so I'm off to buy a battery charger.

For those knowledgeable folk regarding used cars and dealers if I can prove a oil leak exists what are my next actions? Contact the dealer, contact RAC warranty people. Also in the event that the warranty doesn't cover it fully am I entitled to any compensation from the dealer?

As a last resort do I have the right to reject the car?

You've had the car, what, less than a week, so if it's a half decent dealer they should be receptive enough with your problem and help you out. Just go in firmly but fairly and politely, stating that you believe this oil leak to have existed prior to you buying the car and you'd like them to repair it under warranty. You can cite the Sale of Goods Act if need be.

I managed to get a sound clip that quite accurately portrays the rattle/creak.

Turn the volume up loud, and listen from 10 seconds in.

I also sat in the passenger seat and had a crawl around whilst being driven to see if I could localise it - pretty sure it's not coming from the actual dashboard, but I then took the nearside front wheel off and had a poke around under there and couldn't feel anything make the noise :(

Grr :(

£7.5k is almost certainly far too expensive unless it's in showroom condition, especially seeing as you'll be paying £450 or whatever per year to tax it at that age.
