ST220 has now sold :(

Went to the first person who viewed. Didn't even try knocking me down. Lucky man has just got an awesome car!

Give it a month and u will be asking him for it back :p. I still miss mine.
Even though yours was obviously a great example and they are great cars I find it crazy that people will still pay anything over 3.5k for one now as they are old cars and are starting to look dated at 10+ years old now. And it must be a nightmare trying to sell the 06/07 models with the £480 tax

Low mileage good examples will only go up in price now.

Ah, ill miss it. Sure beemer will get me through it though :p

Well joined the club. Got an 04 plate MK3 face lift St220!

Bit of a move up from my old faithful focus 1.8 mk1!!

So far im loving it.... i got it off a local dealer who is a good friend of my mechanic so right now we are just making sure its all as it should be.

I live in macclesfield so i guess i would be insane not to goto JP for the steel exhaust when can afford it!...

So many things i can spend my money on with this car but right now i am just grinning every time i put my foot down.

First "upgrade" will be the brakes.... its a stock ST220 as far as i know, and the brakes feel not upto the job

I am by no way a car enthusiast but now i can see why people are.... its just so much better to drive than a cruddy focus!... do you guys have any tips for a new owner ( its an old car ) but its in pretty good shape. The previous owner had the clutch done at 70k and its now at 100k. So far it feels fine but as im new to a car like this what do i need to keep an ear out for?

I am getting a full wheel allignment done ASAP as i hear these cars are known for issues there.

I took her out yesterday for a good run up to buxton and back and it felt tight, responsive and no noises apart from a slight rattle over bumps. There was no smoke from the rear end which i assume is a good sign. There was a few occasions of a burning oil smell which turned out to be either a small leak or some idiot over fulling the oil when the car was "serviced" for its MOT. Its passed with no advisories.

I went to selectatyre and the lads popped it on a ramp and we noticed some oil on the underside of the sump, but the sump appeared uncorroded... some oil had been blown onto the exhaust hence the smell.

Today i have done 30 miles and noticed no repeat of the smell so im hoping its just the fact the oil had been brimmed. Its booked into my mechanic on thursday for a good look anyway... besides the hand brake needs adjusting as its pretty loose. He knows these cars pretty well and is inspecting the brakes for known issues.

Any advice and tips gratefully received!

What colour? Get some pics up :D
They are great cars I wish I had got a better exhaust when I had mine as there abit too quiet. And yes the brakes are rubbish on them lol keep an eye on the oil mine drank it

Its silver and i will try to get some pics up soon.

I also need to get the doors sealed... so far zero sign of rust on the bottoms and no gunk from the drain holes... however i assume best done in summer? Prevention is better than cure i guess.

I have been over her with a steady eye and have not seen a speck of rust! well apart from the underside on the suspension of course.

Interior is pretty clean but obviously signs of use... air con buttons have lost decals in places and so on... need a bit of stitching done on the driver seat.

I have looked at a guide on replacing the whole air con switch unit (30 quid on ebay) and doesnt look too hard so that may the first little job!

I also moved up from a MK1 Focus (2.0 in my case) to a ST220 and it's a lovely upgrade. You'll feel at home pretty quick with it as it still has that feel most Fords seem to have with the handling - except with bags more grip with the right tyres.

The brakes - I thought they were rubbish too at first and lots of people will suggest the 'ASBO' upgrade (Focus ST brakes) or better. Before you even look at that I suggest replacing the brake hoses with braided ones. This made a massive difference in my case and I realised I was interpreting a spongy pedal with poor brake performance when it was actually fine. If you can time the hoses change with a scheduled brake fluid change then even better.

The JP exhaust is great and makes the car more enjoyable but be patient - it takes about 6 months to settle fully.

I haven't heard of rust being an issue with these but most get that oil leak which is a long labour job. I managed to spot mine before I completed purchase and the dealer fixed it. He said it was a gearbox-out full day job. It's just a seal I think.

Most also suffer from a split breather hose but that's an easy fix which may already have been done.

Well just phoned JP exhausts and they are still doing them :p

Its about a 2 week lead time to get one done so thats good.

Any recommendations for oil?

As far as i am aware its semi synthetic 5W-30 i should get?

Just noticed the passenger side mirror doent fold in... it makes the motor noise but doesnt move. Plenty of units online for 30quid but i think ill strip it down and have a look. If the motor is working must be a gear or a clip snapped maybe.
