Who owns a Mondeo ST220 / ST TDCI?

Just my 2p, i hammer mine on the track with standard brake calipers, hoses and oem pads (brembo pads atm) and they work fine.

I would save the money and not bother upgrading.

I mean its survived 12 years on standard calipers i think your safe xD.

Also i want an exhaust but with children on the way i cant afford it :'(

Oh man rybo, it really is top of my list but saving for hgv lessons in the attempt to get a better position where i work.

i'm even taking my sx off the road this year as i cant afford to run 2 cars atm even tho the sx is in tip top condition.

Well its back from my mechanic and seems all good bar a couple of little things.

The suspected oil leak was indeed because the person who had filled the oil previously pre-MOT couple of weeks ago and topped it to the max!!

Now some of this extra oil has been burned off there is no sign of a leak... we had the underside cleaned and de-greased and then the car was taken on a 10mile blast round some nice long roads and a couple of 70limit by passes and on inspection back at the garage no sign of any oil leak. So far it seems like its ok. I am going to get him to do a full oil change next friday when it is booked in to sort the other niggles.... as from my view point i would rather spend £50 and know its got the correct oil then just assume the previous service guy had bothered to check he was putting the correct stuff in!

The rear offside wheel bearings need a change... still "safe" but droning and some play... so thats being changed and the rear nearside calliper had seized open... its been taken off cleaned and now works. We will be keeping a close eye on the brakes over the next few months just in case.

Other wise he assures me the rest of the car is is very good shape... clutch fine, engine purrring beautifully and no error codes when plugged in the to diagnostic computer.

Exhaust in suprisingly good condition. The bodywork and underside in very good condition as well as the suspension!

So far so good.... time will tell :p

I do feel that there is a leak in the fuel tank, but i will get used to that :D

I have got a quote to re panel and stitch the wear to the drivers seat... the usual wear and tear on the side.... £160 for two new panels. But that can wait for a while, still looks reasonable and doesnt matter if i wear it out more as both damaged sections will be replaced.

Purchase price was £2500 plus my cruddy old focus.... its an 04 plate and done almost exactly 100k miles with 11 dealer service stamps and a pile of expensive invoices for work done to it... clutch replaced 26k miles ago. According to the MOT logs the car has done on average under 6k miles each year for the past 4 years.

Whats the verdict on brake's with these ? From what I can tell they use bog standard MK3 Mondeo brakes, nothing specific to the 220. Any suggested aftermarket replacements (rather than the asbo upgrade) ?

To be honest now i am used to them, they are not as bad as i first thought. If you use your foot harder they respond fine.

Good quality pads are a must have course.

A lot of people claim that the standard brakes are woefully inadequate and that the Focus ST brakes are a massive upgrade. Personally I only think this is necessary if you're using the car on a track. People also seem to want silly money for second hand calipers/carriers.

Initially they feel a bit spongy and not particularly confidence-inspiring but you get used to it, and the car will stop when you want it to. Decent pads, fluid, and even maybe braided hoses will improve things nicely.

Totally agree they are a great looking car and I've hardly seen any on the road . The engine line up is so boring 1.5 Eco boost 1.6 Tdci and then the biggest engines topping out at a 2.0td and 2.0 eco boost both with 200bhp I think. Yawn :( I realise they will be quite quick but it's not just about straight line speed it's about character and a nice engine noise etc which any Mondeo since the ST220 had lacked.
Why is every new car a tiny engine with a bloody turbo on it? N/a engines are so much nicer to drive than a weak engine that suddenly gives u a few seconds of turbo shove.

Cheers, I was checking Ford pricing for OEM discs and pads ....... looking at £135 for the front alone  So thought I would check aftermarket, quite a variety, mintex do some discs with those drilled holes through them, not sure what that does (helps removes heat I assume), but a bit cheaper.

Got to say I cant get enough of the car at the moment, keeps putting a smile on my face when traffic clears and I have a nice clear road ahead

Had a drive a MK2 Focus 1.6 recently, and I cant believe that is similar to what I used to drive, its unbearably slow in comparison.

Seems expensive? OEM front pads were about £45 for a set when I had mine. Not sure I'd bother with OEM discs though.

keeping looking at these and really want one, to save me trawling through the thread what should I look out for?
any years to stay away from?

seems to be some nice examples around at 4-5k

Avoid the 2006/7 models they are £480 tax and will be a nightmare to re sell. If I had 5-6k I would be looking at the mk4 Mondeo with the 2.5T in! Can be had on a 57/08 plate for around 5k

Fair enough the ST220 is a great car I still miss mine lol.
Aim for a 2004/5 with the cheaper tax. 4K should get you a nice one with less than 70k on the clock.
They are very reliable cars just check for rough idling and oil consumption "mine used a lot " then just general things like rust, the heated leather seats work and all the electrics etc.
They are chain driven aswell so don't need cambelt change.

Might be a silly question, but is it normal for gears 1 and 2 to feel a bit ...... restricted, like the car revs will go up but the car seems to not speed up considerably, until you get into 3rd and it goes all out. Doing a bit of googling, it seems many car have a torque limiter in place for the lowest gears, which I'm assuming the ST220 has ?
