I don't think I've ever owned a standalone mp3 player as I've just used my mobile phone for music on the move ever since you could get 1gb+ memory cards at a reasonable price (e.g. Nokia 6230 or maybe Sony Ericsson K750i sort of time at the latest). The quality probably isn't as good as a standalone player but since most of the time I'm either not listening through top quality headphones and/or I'm going to be somewhere that the external environment intrudes on my listening I can't say that I notice the difference much.
