Who owns an iPod alternative?

Using my Galaxy S II now. Before that, I used to use a Sony walkman thingy, but can't be bothered to carry two devices anymore.

My first experience with iTunes many many years ago being slow and crashes a lot long lived with me so I never ended up buying anything Apple.

Bought an iRiver Hp-120 back in 2003 loved it, sound quality, battery life and file compatibility were brilliant. Only replaced it because after many many years of use the battery died.

Now own a Cowon D2, use the DAB radio all the time, great quality and battery life.

Never had any desire to ever own an ipob nor will I ever.

I also use a Cowon D2+, I find the DAB radio invaluable as I can record in perfect quality. Music sounds fab via my Soundmagic in-ears.. It's a great little box of tricks which sadly isn't made any more, and there's hardly anything out there which has DAB built in.

mmmmmm use a phone and your getting a very compomised dac ect ,ok mines not that portable but it sounds amazing
sflo2 via line out ,silver mini-mini neco soundlabs with 8610 upgrade ,ultrasone hfi780
battery life and firmware of sflo comes noware near an ipod but i like the simple drag and drop .
having said that i like the classic and my daughter has the 5.5g with the wolfson dac that sounds great .
use an archos key for work and thats just fine (edit so i cant really knock phone users!!)

Ive had loads of cheap little mp3 players and used to use my sony ericsson w810i however I then got an Ipod shuffle which I've now had for two years and also have got a iphone 3g which I now use for music. Can't be beaten for ease of use/interface and the ipod shuffle is indestructible.

Not a single thing wrong with iTunes managing my music.

I want all my music on my iPod, I want to update a few playlists here and there. Done

It's so much better than drag and drop or doing it all manually

Let's hope you never run into the problems that 1000s upon 1000s of owners have ran into just by ticking that box.
The OP that I had replied to, knows with his problem he would/could lose everything but unticking that box would sort it and leave his files on the iPod.

I use the Sansa Clip+ with Sennheiser IE8's. I find the quality good enough on the clip. I use a Fiio E7 as a DAC if I use my ipod

Did they ever make an iPod with a digital out then? I still use my Iriver with an external Dac, but an iPod would be far nicer to use with wifi/podcasts/etc

Currently have a couple of years old nano i use for running, Don't use an mp3 player otherwise. I have an Iriver IHP-140 i've had for years but sadly it had a meeting with a concrete floor when I was working in a box factory in Australia and hasn't been the same since. Not sure i've found anything that matches its sound quality and ease of use. I replaced it at the time with a touch when they had just come out, but it lasted little more than a year before it died on me, conveniently just before a 13hr flight.

I'm on of very few people that owns a Microsoft Zune. (The latest HD model)

I love it to bits but it never took off in the US. The software is fantastic too, beats the crap out of iTunes. I would hardly even call it a competitor though because its app store is quite terrible.

I have a sony NWZ-E series 4GB mp3 player which I got 3 years ago and it is awesome, 40+ hour battery life, small, great sound and never let me down.

would never go to an ipod.

I own the following-:

Sony Mini-disc player/recorder. My first move away from audio cassettes. The main reasons I bought this was because it had an a.m/f.m. radio and because you could use it to record onto

Creative Zen - the main reason I bought this was to be compatible with Audible downloads

Sony MWZ-A828 with Bluetooth Headphones - the main reason for this was the bluetooth headphons. They don't have a cable to get in the way when doing chores.

Finally - a Cowan D2. The main reason I bought this was for its DAB radio.

Do you actually need every song you have on there at once? How often do you listen to more than say 20gb of it? My mp3 collection is somewhat larger than 32gb but I don't need or want the potential to listen to every song all the time.

yes i do need it on all there at once, i listen to my ipod 3-4 hours a day and sometimes 6+ hours. i dont want to be out and thinking oh i wish i could listen to this or i wish i could listen to that right now. i also dont have my music in mp3 i have it lossless which means although i have 90gb of music its only 3,800 songs.

I've never had an iPod/iPhone and never intend to get one.

The sound quality while not terrible is seriously sub-par when compared to others.

I was a Creative person for the longest time but each generation got steadily worse. The EU sound-level restriction was the last straw and started looking for a new alternative.

I finally got myself a Cowon J3. Quite simply...the best MP3 player i have ever experienced in my life. The Sound quality is jaw dropping as is the battery life. I'm a purest so i don't need my MP3 player to play anything but music. If i want other functions then my Samsung Galaxy S2 Mobile can do that.

The iPod will never match Cowon for sound quality

It doesn't matter if the iPod was the best on the market and cheaper than any competitors. People will always say something bad about it simply because it's Apple.

inb4 20 pages

If they sold the 32Gb version for £200, no need to use iTunes and was drag and drop and had a Mini SD slot to expand the memory then i would have got one. No questions asked.

I've actually heard the sound quality on the iPhone 4 at least is actually very good (technically).

I generally use my phone for listening to music, it saves carrying around 2 devices. However I'm going to pick up a Creative Zen M300 soon as I want something really small with bluetooth for running and this seems ideal.

Sound quality if probably far more to do with your portable amp/dac/headphones than the player these days.

This is where you want to be:

Not mine, found on another forum.

edit: moon man, you're getting there ;)
