Steve Mclaren announces his first England squad at weekend and it rumoured that the front runners for the captaincy are Steven Gerrard or John Terry with Frank Lampard an outsider.

Firstly I think its very fine margins between the pair. Both excellent footballers technically, captain of their club side and on the face of it the will to win (2 Premier Leagues and 1 European cup between them recently). Both could have had better world cups but I put the blame firmly at the door of Sven for that. Sometimes they can be a little exuberant in the tackle, which comes across as being rash. Both are fantastic ambassadors for their country and club

Personally I would go for Stevie G out of the two/three names mentioned. As I say very fine margins in it for both. However John Terry is a very good player in an exceptionally strong Chelsea side. Stevie G appears to excel in a Liverpool side that arguably weaker. The thing I like about Gerrard is he come across as professional, no nonsense and doesn't dodge a question type. So he will fulfil his obligations both on and off the field as England captain.

As a UTD fan I have no bias to either. Who would you like to see as the next England captain and why

Dons maybe worthy of poll ?

I'm a Liverpool fan but I still reckon Terry should get it as I've always been of the opinion that a no-nonsense centreback makes the best captain. It's the position where you have the viewpoint and the time to see the game as a whole and can make best use of the captains influence to make the little changes that can help the team as a whole perform.

lampard? LOL... i really hope not... he shouldnt even be in the startin 11 let alone captain... :p

very hard to choose between gerry and terry... very hard indeed... they both appear to be of the stronger characters of the england side...

i suppose giving it to gerry would cement his position in midfield and signal to lampard to know where his place is in the pecking order... that might do more good for england than anything else... :D

Gerrard for me, I prefer midfield captains, Terry will continue to lead the defence anyway, as carragher does for liverpool.

Gerrard picks games up and changes them inspiring the whole team in the process, he is a fantastic captain for liverpool and he can do the same for england, Terry is also a great captain, but as I say he will still have influence. And yes, gerrard getting the captincy and officiallt replacing lamps would be fantastic, I really cant see how lamps is better, there aint much in it in the shooting, but positionally, skillfully, pace, stregnt, tackleing, passing and creativing gerrard wins hands down, if you cant have both (which you cant) then there is only one choice.

Lampard is a fantastic, world class player, and I dont mean to say he isn't but he aint gerrard.

Gerrard for me to.

A captain leads the team.... it's common sense to have that person leading from the middle of the park where he can send orders out to both the attackers and defenders at all times.

Plus Gerrard's top.

Terry, still ;)
He's a no nonsense natural leader who will always be first on the team sheet & he also led the countries champions for the last 2 years, what better credentials can you have?:)

I thought Lampard was taking the No swearing, Big Kev saying he wanted captaincy.. his team-mate has it over him at Chelsea, so surely he should respect that Terry is obviously a better captain than him.

I'd like ot see Gerrard.

I'm also a liverpool fan and I agree for exactly the same reasons.

FA cup, champions league, super cup......... not bad, and judging by the fact that international games are in tornaments that would make gerrards CV more applicable.

its nothing to do with who you support, its to do with how you see the role of a captain gerrard and terry do it differently.
its definetly to do with what mclaren thinks a captain should be.
