Gone with Gerrard as i think that it seems to inspire him to greatness at liverpool, some people like terry become captain and play superbly as they always do, some people like gerrard become captain and take their game up a step when you really need it.

i would like Gerrard to be captain over Terry

Terry is a great defender and makes lots of important saves

but the FA Cup and Champions league proved Gerrard can bring a team from behind to win

I think Gerrard would be the better choice, purely beacause I think captaincy would improve his performances for England more than it would improve Terry's. Terry is a leader in any case, with or without the armband.

My money's on Terry. more experiance.

Indeed and seems to be the most logical choice imho. Plus he exhibits a lot more captain like qualities ie getting the players all riled up when things arent going so well.

So for me it would have to be Terry, i think making Gerrard captain would be a mistake just like making Beckham the captain. Not that i have anything against Gerrard, superb player but not quite captain material just yet.

For me you have just given all the reasons why Gerrard should be the captain. As you said, Terry displays all of the qualities of a captain, and does so for England with or without the armband. If making Gerrard capatin meant England got the Gerrard that Liverpool see most weeks, then surely it has to be worth it.

I really doubt we'll ever see the pink and white Gerrard in England colours. He's still a good player but he doesn't carry his club form to the International scene.

i think you could aim that point at the rest of them too :p

Terry for me because he's a defender and see's more of the game.

If anyone can be bothered, it'd be interesting to see a list of winning captains from the World Cup and Euro Championships over the last 50 years or so. I'd take a guess at the majority of these being defenders or goalkeepers. :)

I don't know. Terry, Robinson, Rooney, Cole, even Crouch.

Gerrard is so much better for Liverpool than England. Very much like Lampard in that respect.

I was bored and also intruiged to know so I have done some research. :D

World Cup
1966 Bobby Moore - Defender
1970 Pele - Forward
1974 Franz Beckenbauer - Defender
1978 Daniel Passarella - Defender
1982 Dino Zoff - Goalkeeper
1986 Diego Maradonna - Forward
1990 Lothar Matthaus - Midfielder/Sweeper ?
1994 Dunga - Midfielder
1998 Didier Deschamps - Midfielder
2002 Cafu - Defender
2006 - Fabio Canavarro - Defender

UEFA Champions
1964 Francisco(Sp) - Midfielder
1968 Jacinto Facchetti - Defender
1972 Franz Beckenbauer - Defender
1976 ????
1980 Karl Heinze Rummenigge - Forward
1984 Michell Plattini - Midfielder
1988 Ruud Gullitt - Midfielder
1992 Peter Schemichel - Goalkeeper
1996 Jurgen Klinsmann - Forward
2000 Didier Deschamps - Midfielder
2004 Theo Zagorakis - Midfielder

22 Major championships

7 defenders
9 Midfielders
3 Forwards
2 Goalkeeprs
1 to be confirmed from Euro 1976

If you include the Goalies with the Defenders its a pretty good split between them & Midfield
