the guy before tennant had been on TV before you know.. hes been in hollywood movies aswell, david tennant was on the bbc before drwho aswell its not like either of them were nobodies picked off the street

It's not like they were Tom Hanks's of the acting scene before they got the role. I mean, it's not like Christopher Ecclestone got an Oscar and became new James Bond since quitting Dr.Who job. Actors out there spend 10 years playing Chandlers to their Monicas for 24 episodes a year. It's ridiculous for someone who at the peak of his career had background role in Nicolas Cage movie to his name to quit something like Dr.Who after 1 episode out of 13. The guy will never find a decent job again. no one in their right mind will prop any budget against lead that cannot do continuous 13 episodes of low budget, quick production drama without changing his mind.

Christopher Eccelston - he was brought in to kick-off the new Doctor Who precisely because he's a heavy-weight actor, despite them knowing he'd probably leave soon (Russell Davies has gone on record saying that he knew he probably wouldn't be there for more than one series).

The BBC was lucky to hire Chris Eccleston for DW. It was below him professionally and he didn't need to do it.

Also, the actors in Friends were paid a hell of a lot more towards the closing seasons of that show, the type of fees the BBC couldn't hope to afford.

Not only that, but signing up for a show long term can be a total career killer so its probably not very wise.

I'm not sure why you think they were lucky. He's a background actor. Known face but background face none the less. To this day he had no A movie lead. His best paid role since leaving Dr. Who is like 4th bad guy in G.I. Joe.

Even more so with David Tennant.

What I mean is, for something as reckognisable as Dr.Who to be career killer one would first have to have a definable career to begin with.

The point is that just because you don't watch the BBC doesn't mean you're not watching content funded or part-funded by the license fee.

I have no idea where you get the '70+' figure from either (without including sky) when not including any content from the BBC, channel 4 or ITV.
