Who with a 8800 series is getting R600?

If it is serioulsy better than my GTS and I mean a lot better and only like he price of a GTX then maybe. But it would have to be very special.

But then again what will the GTS be like in DX10 compared to the R600. The R600 could be better in DX9 and worse than the GTS in DX10, who knows only time will tell.

nu uh, i doubt the r600 is gonna blow away the g80's imo, and im secure with my setup for a long time (like a previous post, 1-2yrs tops)

naaa, see, that just shows they have done what nvidia done only a little sooner, and a few minor upgrades, not worth a total respec of a machine lol

unlucky ati, better luck next time.

What on earth. .

I expect that it will be a fair bit faster than the G80, due to the extra time they've had developing it.

I think that G81 and R600 will be pretty much neck and neck, maybe the G81 being slightly better in OpenGL where R600 is slightly faster in Dx9/10?

I'm just speculating of course, but it wouldn't surprise me. :)

The extra time was due to a flaw in the design I believe.

Being realistic tho, I think ATI were taken by suprise by G80, its seriously quick - moreso than most new generations, at least since Geforce2. If I had to guess, ATI used the time for a rethink which will hopefully pay off for us.

No drama tho, I think G80 owners have plenty of time to enjoy what they have and still sell it for a good £££ if the timings right.

What we can get afterwards depends on how the new cards perform imo. We have nothing but speculation atm - it could go either way.

Might upgrade might not. Depends which is quicker, it'll probs either be an R600 or another 8800GTX for SLI running.
Single GTX is still damn quick (not that it's gonna be used for games....) thrashing 7900GT SLI setup running a heavy overclock, with a stock cooled single GTX. R600 probably won't offer much more (GDDR4 perhaps for more memory speed) but performance should be interesting to see.

Exactly. Wait and see, then decide.

As a footnote, SLI GTX could be a viable option if the prices really do crash.

I think I will be upgrading when my 8800gtx is not giving me enough frames and I see a good deal on a card that is significantly faster.... the only game that gives my card a run for it money is poorly ported R6 VEGAS and I can not see the R600 doing miracles on that front :p

Until u can surf the web, watch movies; use P2P apps then the consoles are just not versatile enough for me. This is 1 compelling reason to use PCs but not upgrade every 3 months.

ATM I am playing America's Army and BF2 at 1280*1024 (on a relatively new vx922); I can play full details and 8xAF and 4xAA, and get vsync limited (70hz Im running at) most of the time.

I think a beefier cpu than my opteron 146 @ 2.7Ghz would help bring up the minimum framerate on some of the latest maps available for AA. It goes to 40fps in places. Same thing when I was playing city of villains, with a big team of certain ATs the fps would dip down to 10fps at times.

Im surprise that this thread isnt locked though, since its hardly going to inspire mad upgrading sprees to keep up with the latest gear.

I wait till I can get a significant performance increase at a price which has lost a lot of its brand new bite. I tend to only buy current gen technology. I bought a x1900xt for £270 when it was on special offer. Although its been less than 6 months and their has been 1 refresh from ATI and 2 Nvidia releases; so in my mind it my be worth going for last gen tech with a graphics card with the speed at which they fall out of favor.

The new ati card could be 10x faster than the G80 but without software being widely available to give any noticable difference between that and the G80 I currently have, 'upgrading' would be a pointless move imo - much the same as upgrading to a quad from C2D. I upgraded in the last run from a GX2 simply because running everything maxed out on the GX2 struggled in some games - the G80 dosn't have this problem at this moment in time and runs everything flawlessly. In the future when games catch up then I'll simply get another GTX at a knockdown price.

This question is impossible to answer until the R600 is at least out to review sites. Currently we dont know any spec for sure and less about true performance.

As someone who normally keeps pace with the latest hardware by taking care to sell before the drop is too severe I will probably upgrade, but only if the ATI offers a worthwhile increase in performance etc.

My biggest headache atm is the whole chipset format. I would like to ensure that my rig components are best suited to each other. Currently i have an intel Chipset board, with Xfire support and an Nvidia GPU... i would like to go either Nvidia chipset with Nvidia card or Intel / ATI chipset with ATI card. But until i know which card to follow i'm putting this decission on ice.

Extra time? You do know the G80 architecture was 4 (2002) years in development?

Yeah but the advantage is that ATi have seen the G80 in it's glory, they know how fast it is, and have had time benchmarking one alongside an R600.

The bar was raised with the 8800, and ATi knew where they had to aim to keep competitive. With G81, where do they aim? Who knows?

They had time to beat the GX2 but didn't, I seriously hope they DO better the G80 though as NV have held the crown for too long.

oh my god
I just saw your system!
Trust me, there really is no point in upgrading that! twin 8800 GTX?????
crikey it is a wonder that the lights dont go dim for miles around when you fire that thing up!

anyway, do you guys think it is worthwhile to buy an 8800 GTS now then?
I was thinking late March by the time I could afford it, and am very limited in temrs of Card LENGTH. The 8800 GTS is the maximum length I will be able to fit into my PC. ATIs new R600 cards all seem to be HUGE (the X2000XTX is supposed to be 12" )

Would it be more sensible to wait and see Nvidia's refresher line?

When you have the money available pick the best card you can afford at that time. Forget about looking at what is comming up next because there will always be several "just round the corner".

get the best you can and then stop looking and enjoy the card you have brought.

If you are ready now then the 8800 GTS / GTX is the best to get. If you will not have monies till March... well wait and see whats about then.

I wish ppl would get it right, at launch the 8800 GTX was NOT £450, that was one etailers price, how you get that that was the launch price ill never know.

But almost all sites were selling them for around £450 and some higher, some of the largely unknown brands were a little less but most were around £450 and some higher. Anyone who bought one on launch knows what they were selling for so theres no point pretending they were selling for less.

I know OCUK was upto £450 but I don't shop here, I'd list all the sites that were selling it for 450+ on launch but considering where we are thats not going to happen.
