Whoever pulled the trigger is...

Read the ops link (too lazy to remove formatting from cut and paste):

"Police were scrambled to Levenshulme Station after reports of a man with a gun - but it turned out to be the man's cane which was folded up"

Clearly but you said *it was a folded up walking stick* and posted a giant picture of a military folded up walking stick.

No it's not a military anything, it's just a black folding cane of the type that many old folk carry. You're digging for a conspiracy you're not going to find.

Google folding cane and they all look like that;

There is nothing military about it. You can even get them with "military" flowers on:

And this is the problem with tasers "its not lethal so i can shoot first and worry about it later"

With real guns at least theres the threat of court reprisals and murder charges to make you think "do i actually wanna shoot this guy"

Conversely isn't that also the key benefit of Tasers? Heat of the moment quick decisions aren't always right. Better to be able to dust the chap off and apologise than bury him?

It's all fun and games when someone just gets a little nip from a tazer.

Let's just hope we continue stay away from arming our police with firearms. Humans are, by and large, total ******* morons - this sort of mistake is just going to happen.

Sadly, tasers aren't an alternative to guns, they're a supplement. Back when having the police all armed with tasers was still a debate many people in favour of it said that it was great because it would be an alternative to shooting people with guns. The rest of us all kept pointing out that what it would actually mean would be the police using them when they wouldn't use guns. Which turned out to be the case. No permanent injury (normally) seems to be taken as "no harm done" by some people. Never mind how the person in pain on the ground feels.

You don't follow news regarding US police then?

The article says he was blind, not deaf, so presumably he heard someone shouting get down and failed to react. I have sympathy for the police in this scenario.

This was my thinking - why didn't he respond to police?

I struggle to believe the police just sneaked up behind him, whispered "put the gun down" and shocked the poor old boy when he didn't immediately respond to command.

Would have been amusing to watch though.

Probably, he heard the commotion but figured it couldn't possibly be directed at him. Not unreasonably - he's a blind man after all, why would the police be getting so animated at him?

Yeah sounds about right.

Conversely an uncooperative man wielding a "military walking stick" - can see how it happened too.

Well he's received undisclosed sum, so the coppers are in the wrong.

That's a different case I think, referring to a guy who's white cane was mistaken for a samurai sword. Getting a pay out doesn't necessarily mean they were in the wrong. Just means it's easier to pay out than get sued, fight a case and rack up lawyer's fees.

exactly. the guys is blind. he hears a police officer shouting for someone to get down on the ground. he knows he isn't doing anything or carrying anything to cause the police to behave this way to him. he can't see who they are looking or pointing at so assumes it isn't him. he's probably thinking some poor **** is in trouble, right up until he gets tased and is laying twitching on the ground!
