why all the hate for hs2?

Perhaps more importantly it will free up a lot of desperately needed freight capacity - if we offload all the long distance, nearly all the middle distance and some of the local/commuter trains from the West Coast Main Line, we will be able to put a lot more freight on rails instead of the roads. This will be cheaper, greener and will un-clog various motorways and A-roads, not to mention taking lorries off the roads into city centres.

And you actually think that will happen?

Let the private sector pay all the costs. I want my tax money going to NHS ect then line rich kids pockets.

Your tax money will allways be part of our Rail infrastructure.

Network Rail technically being a private company it is effectively part of the public sector, so no getting out of it.

Ask the Chinese to build it for us to save on labour costs

The 1,318km Beijing-Shanghai high-speed line connects the cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin, travelling across the provinces of Hebei, Shandong, Anhui and Jiangsu. The line connects two of the country's most prominent economic areas and forms the busiest railway route.
It was opened in June 2011, only 38 months after construction began.
This high-speed route runs parallel to the 1,464km Beijing-Shanghai main railway line, which is one of the most important in China. It is solely dedicated to passenger train operations.

Civil engineering work on the 1,318km railway line cost around 83.7bn yuan

Even if the HS2 did get built and was running in say 2030, once we have 2 cms of snow in January the whole thing will shut down.

Seriously though, a huge steaming pile of dog turd this one, will go vastly over budget and just not realise the so called benefits the supporters believe it will bring.

If it was presented to the Dragons, "I'm out" would be heard by all.

Would rather they spent the money reopening some of the branch lines they killed for no good reason in the 70s.

About 80% of railway lines in Cornwall were axed, killing entire economies in some towns. But they didn't consider local economy as a factor, only how profitable each individual line was. Sad.

Oh and now we have massive road congestion in Cornwall in Summer. The place grinds to a halt. Thanks, Beeching. And thanks to both the Tories and Labour; both just as guilty as each other of tearing up our national railways.

Nobody really cares about Cornwall FoxEye, it's some place far out West were some people go in the Summer, and laugh at the six toed locals.

Fast inter-city connections are excellent in Europe and are beneficial, and what's crazy is that the time it took us to get from London to almost the German border took as much time as it would have to have taken the train from London to Edinburgh.
That's not surprising really, considering the distance to Edinburgh from London is further than the border of Germany.

Well it isn't.

London to where we went near Strasbourg was about 450miles - this included changing train at Paris.

London to Edinburgh is around 390 miles.

Yet the travel time was just shy of 5hrs.

Actually the railway is fairly resilient to snow, the risk is that the snow has covered up other obstructions on the track such as fallen trees/branches but it's normally dealt with fairly quickly. Up here trains are equipped with ploughs on high risk routes and the sandite train runs regularly when there is the risk of ice forming which is far more dangerous than snow..
