Why are we afraid of fish?

On average, how many times do the fish lovers among us eat fish a week? I've already said that at least 4-5 days a week I have mackerel for breakfast. But I also have fish at least twice for dinner during the week as well. I find it cheaper than buying lots of red meat - I love red meat though, but tend to have that twice a week only.

6 times.

Lunch daily, apart from Sunday normally.(mackerel - tinned)

Normally served with chorizo, rice, spinach or mushroom and some kind of sauce.

Fish meals 1-2 times a week but we always have prawns, smoked salmon, cold smoked salmon, crab, smoked mackerel ..etc in the fridge so I have some form of fish/shellfish most days. My dads a fishmonger :-)

I'm more of a seafood person, the only fish I like is Salmon, Tuna, Lemon Sole and Monkfish. (Pollock fishfingers at a push).

I really don't like any smoked or oily varieties of other types.

Fish from a chippy? Bleurgh!

Pretty sure it all stems from a traumatic experience with batter cod and a fish bone getting lodged in my palate.

Eat fish 2 or 3 times most weeks, usually salmon fillets cooked in the pan with butter/lemon juice and eat them with fresh veg. Also have smoked mackerel from time to time with poached eggs for breakfast. I also like tinned sardines:o which I quite often have with hard boiled eggs & salad. Not very adventurous with fish but I like all that I've tried, local farm shop has a good selection of whole fish (albeit frozen) so I should branch out a bit.

I'm going to contradict myself in a moment so bare with me.

I don't like fish. I've tried.
About 18 months ago as part of trying a healthier lifestyle as a family we tried a number of different fish "Fresh" Frozen fish ready meals tinned etc etc. And I didn't like any of it.

Fast forward until last year on Holiday in the Maldives and I ate some sort of fish dish every day. I thought to myself well its all inclusive if I dont like it I can get a plate of something else. Maybe it was because the fish was Fresh and Not "Fresh" that it didn't taste really fishy. A couple of weeks ago I had a craving for Fish 'n Chips from the chippy which I wolfed down.

If I could find a fish that tastes like steak I'm laughing.

Yummi, just had breakfast. Love a bit of kipper

It was indeed good, I think people are far to stuck on the toast or cereal breakfast, it didn't even take long, under 10mins to cook.

Like cod, salmon and tuna.

Baked/steamed Salmon is very nice
Battered cod
Tuna any which way

The trouble is, I need quite a lot to feel full.

Fashion, class etc
It's just like offal, loads of stuff fell out of fashion and I think initially it had a lot to do with class/wealth and people not wanting to be seen as poor, since then we've had the whole, it's disgusting, people won't eat stuff on bones and off course lost cooking skills and recipes.

I cant find razor clams :( or chicken hearts :(

I'm also finding it hard to find out exactly how animals are reared, even the organic/welfare orientated farms, massive about us page, rarely give the details, which is disappointing.

Oops a little off topic.

Try here, we get a lot of our meat from them.

I find Bolton market pretty good for fish, love river cobbler at the minute dirt cheap, no bones and is very nice.
