Why buy something u wont use?

Then there's the power delivery and the noise side of things.
so true. ive got a fair bit of power in a 1.8t golf, its quick enough, but there is lag, which is easy enough to drive around the problem, but still takes effort and isnt toally flexible

big NA engines ***

plus regardless of the law, some people will deploy their power just for giggles

The question the OP is asking could only come from someone who can't drive or hasn't driven anything with more than 50bhp.

Whenever i see a small engined car try and overtake something on a country road it ALWAYS makes me laugh, they seem to crawl past, it's painfull.

Always makes me think of that time we saw that dipstick in some supermini overtake a couple of cars on the Bosley to Congleton road, on a blind crest, with double white lines. The overtake started on a dashed single, but certainly didn't finish on one!

Why is it a waste of money? If people work hard for their money they can spend it on whatever they want.

My thought. Also having a more powerful engine makes driving much more relaxing: you don't need to worry about whether your car is going to slow down going up that steep hill, or will struggle to overtake that numpty in the Toyota. In my experience drivers of more powerful cars tend to be more laid back and courteous - the really bad driving comes from mid-powered cars driven by the desperate who think they are in a Porsche.

I actually have this problem. :o

All it requires though is far more planning and staying as far back as you can so you have more time to accelerate to a suitable overtaking speed.

Oh and @OP I thought by clocked you maybe meant remapped?

Just because you have a big engine doesn't mean you need to drive everywhere trying to attain the speed of light.

Sitting at 70mph on the motorway and sitting at 90mph on the motorway will only really end up in minutes worth of difference to a journey time, so perhaps these people use their big engines elsewhere and just chill out on the motorway, rather than caning it at 100mph in their tiny diesel like they have a point to prove.

I have highlighted the points in this quote that i think are the most true/hilarious.

That was mental, how that didn't turn into a crash i will never know!

You can drive a fast car slowly but you can't drive a slow car quickly.

I would rather have a load of power in reserve for when you may need it.

Cant beat the feeling of acceleration, i love driving around in second and planting my foot when i come onto a slip road. You dont need to speed to have fun and enjoy power.

What an odd thread

Does that mean people with Ferrari's are mugs if they don't do 170mph everywhere? I suggest you have a drive of a 530i or a 330i and see if you change your mind. A large capacity 6cyl will sound and drive much nicer than a 4 pot van engine.

I see this on almost on a daily basis and i still tense up every time i do. You can see the oncoming car coming closer and closer whilst Mr 1.2 Corsa is still midway through the overtake and well and truly on the wrong side of the road - it's scary to witness.

I do weep when I'm trying to drive conservatively at 70mph getting 47mpg and a 520d goes by at 80mph getting 52mpg. My adult conscious kicks in and says "think how much money I could be saving".

Then, I accelerate up a sliproad in complete serene bliss, total enjoyment for me (;)) and I remember why I didn't buy a 520d or indeed a 135i :o

Why do people buy 330's or 530's when u cant use them for there true performance my dad drives a 320d and a 523i he's clocked both of them and often when we are driving he's usually overtaking 530's that are in the slow lane etc.

i just dont understand why people waste money on cars that they will never really appreciate, and it's pointless buying them anyway cos if ur caught doing over 90 chances are u run a risk of losing the licence. a 2 litre is more than enough for the uk and ireland since the cops are so strict with driving.

If you need this explaining to you, you will likely never understand, thus I see little point in bothering.

OP, why does your dad buy BMW's if all he really needs is a cheap Kia or Ford etc as there both just cars? Surely buying anything 'premium' is just wasting money?

And why does he have 2 cars? Surely he can only drive one at a time? Owning 2 cars is just wasting money?

Moeks has a good point though, this thread was doomed from the start.
