why cannot I not work this out? maths question.

(7.50-7.21)/7.21

gives the increase as a multiple (aka fraction) of the original.

= 0.040222

where 1 would be 100% increase, 0.1 is 10%, so the number above is roughly 4%

The answer is 4% increase.

should have just kept using a calculator

7.21 +1%
7.21 +2%
until you got the wage you were looking for instead of looking a plonker in GD :D

claim you rounded the percentage up/down :D for the benefit of your mate and he would have been like wow this guy has mad math skillz yo

4.022191400832178%

EDIT: Another way to do it (answers rounded up)

7.50 - 7.21 = 0.29
0.29 / 7.21 = 0.04
0.04 * 100 = 4%

Thanks lads.

Obviously I knew what I was doing wrong, I was just testing the caliber of GD, well done, you all passed :).

It is embarrassing the amount of time these threads come up for maths skills a typical 12 y/o should have.

Yes, most people probably could have done this at 12, when they had recently been taught this. Add on decades of other knowledge learnt on top of that, that it might not have been used in 10/20/30 years plus a multitude of other factors such as age or tiredness then it's kind of understanding that people can struggle with basic things.

To be fair I don't hold information well if I don't use it daily.

I got a C in French so I was obviously pretty decent in school, now I can only remember bonjour lol.

Same with maths, I was great with trigonometry, ask me now I'd have to Google it!!

The nominal difference is 7.50-7.21= 0.29. The easiest way to quickly calculate what the percentage is:

7.21 --------------->100
0.29---------------->X

X = 100*0.29 / 7.21 = 4.02

The pay went up by 4.02%.
