Why do people cheat in games?

The thing is, there are loads of things that are 'really really funny when you're doing it', but most people don't do them because it's just needlessly annoying/ruining other peoples game so you can sit there laughing/being pathetic.

I don't know, I just try and not be a **** to other people. Just seems a bit weird and sad.

To be fair thats the internet though and specifically online gaming. You can play out any role you want without recourse. You kind of get used to it. Should imagine if you are new to it its very intimidating.

Yea, I'm the opposite.
I like being a **** to random idiots online. Although not all the time, it depends what mood I'm in :)

We're moving into discussing toxic players rather than just cheating.

Yea. I agree with others here. It is impossible to feel good about yourself for winning a game by cheating. There is zero to be gained from it. Cheating in an online game, to gain advantage and win is simply wrong and I think less of people who do it.

In single player games I don't see the harm in it.
For example, a game might have a really good story so you want to play through it just for that. If you are not bothered about the action/shooting so just want to stomp everything and get on with the game it makes sense. I have done this once or twice.

Maybe you really want to play the 2nd or 3rd game in a trilogy but haven't played the first one, so you use God mode to just blitz through it... I fully understand that.

I used to play alongside someone who I felt cheated but he himself didn't feel that he did. He'd use special skins that made his opponents glow and sound files that played when an any player entered a certain area.

To me this is cheating but he believed everybody used these files and it wasn't cheating as it wasn't an aimbot, he couldn't see through walls.

I wonder how many others cheat like this.

I know in the early FPS games it was common for people to use really low resolutions as this supposedly made the hit boxes larger so you could hit better.

People will always find 'tactics' like this to make themselves better, whether it's classed as a cheat or not I am not too sure. Personally, I've always been a fan of just playing with skill, if I have a bad game which is 50/50 on FPS's I just change server or take a break.

That still happens today i.e. bf 3 and 4

In bf 3, iirc the lower the resolution, the less visual recoil there is and in these games generally everything on low/off except mesh will give you an advantage i.e. you don't have as much crap floating around, less dense bush areas etc. so it is easier to spot enemies. Also, for people using MSAA and/or vsync, they are just adding input lag thus giving a massive disadvantage to themselves.

Personally I don't have an issue with this, I do it myself when it comes to FPS MP games, more so to maintain a constant 120FPS though as I hate FPS fluctuations + if I drop below that, screen tearing is more noticeable. If I wanted shiny graphics and an immersive experience, I would be playing single player :p

The same could be said for people with 144HZ screens, better gaming mice, better sound equipment (so important this), better network connections etc. etc. Anyone using any one or all of these things will instantly have an advantage over someone using a bog standard 60HZ screen with high input lag, a crappy £5-10 mouse and/or a basic headset.

Same even goes for these 21.9 screens, you get more FOV at the sides than a 16.9 screen:

This is even more advantageous when it comes to helis and jets too.

EDIT:

It is even worse for CS:GO too.

EDIT:

Even some asus ROG monitors come built in with HIP fire crosshairs, a lot of FPS MP gamers use blu-tack on their screen too.
