Why do people cheat in games?

Game designers build in stuff like status rewards in order to make people want to continue playing, but that also creates a desire for crappy players to cheat to get those rewards, so they can pretend they are really good.

Take all the social recognition out of a game and the cheating goes down, as there is nobody out there to compare yourself to.

That said, if you are playing against Russians then they'll cheat just because they can.
Every bot & trainer seems to have originated there first

That alone show you how deluded that person is, a exploit is a cheat, its just another cheaters way of excusing their actions! love the way they try make their excuses sound legitimate, there is no such thing as a legitimate exploit!!

I don't think it's always as black and white as that. Something like bunnyhopping in counter strike is basically exploiting a bug, but now they've restricted that in the newest version people say they've lowered the skill cap of the game. There's also a full game mode (KZ) built off it in the game.

Depends I guess. I never cheat in PvP, but I have cheated in games before. I've cheated in ME3 MP to get more weapons packs as I was sick of still not getting the Cerberus Harrier after 350 hours of multiplayer.

I cheat in Fallout 4 by spawning common crafting items such as Wood and Steel as I'm building big settlements and there simply isn't enough scrap-able items to give me wood (erm...). I don't see this as cheating though really. Building a big wooden shanty building isn't making the game easier, although I suppose you could argue that it levels me up quicker. Not why I build though.

I don't cheat if I can't get past a boss etc. though, I don't see why you'd want to.

Only ever cheated on swtor. Was a space mission bot. Used it to get other classes characters to max level. Done it for 3 characters. Lasted about a month doing this cheat. Only done it for the class buff you got. Would get it on every character if you had them at max level. I was a 10 hour a week person.

Wouldnt do it on another game. Tbh I find games like Skyrim hard with them console commands and the huge scale of the game. But I don't tend to use cheats on them really.

Enjoy most mmos. Wow. ESO. Archeage. What ever comes out next with similar styles.

winning whilst cheating is not winning imho. Cheating on online games makes no sense to me.

Single player games is fine your effecting no one else.

I never cheat in online games.

Single player you're only ruining / enhancing your own experience and it's fully your choice.
I gave myself some crafting resources on my first play through of FO4 because I couldn't be bothered to find them all the time for my settlements.

I did quite a bit more in my second play through, but mostly to enhance my own enjoyment.

I've played CS:GO against a few cheaters, and unless they leave at the end of a map then I'll leave and join another server.
It's just frustrating especially the obvious ones, I really don't get why people cheat on the casual servers it's not like you get anything out of it.

For most people however it's just that the experience of winning is too important to miss out on, as such they cheat to get there.
The problem for a lot of them is that they either win too much, and people start looking closer at them, or they become complacent and get picked up when they are lazy.

Speaking of grey areas, in eso, aetherian archive there was a spot u were supposed to have 12 ppl stand on 12 platforms, in order to teleport the raid, however, someone found you could jump over the gap with enough speed on a horse, however, getting 12 ppl all to make the jump was very rare, touch of lag or slight misjudgement & they were off & into the deep pit of death, so, would you consider that a cheat/exploit or not?.

Sounds like an exploit - unless it was a PVP scenario though I don't consider it in the same realm of cheating as i.e. in a multiplayer FPS game.

People commonly use unconventional or unintended mechanics in MMO/PVE games to do things that the developer hadn't originally intended.

I don't cheat in general, not cheated on any PC games but I do admit that back in the day of Mario Kart Wii I had a modded Wii and would cheat on there because it was hilarious. I would cheat not to win, but to screw over the person in each game who was winning and to troll. I found it funny making it so someone was getting lapped by everyone, completely ruining the game for them. They must have been sat there at home spitting nails, absolutely fuming. Especially if I targeted the same person multiple races in a row. I would just give myself any weapon I wanted basically shooting them all the time so they were just kept in the same spot.

I know it sounds cruel, but looking back on it now I still find it funny, makes me want to dig out the Wii and do it again :D

I wonder how many people in this thread are actually being honest..?

Nah. We just all think your a bit of a ****. ;)

I've never cheated in an online game. The only reason I can think of why people would want to cheat though would be to troll other people for laughs, which to be honest I think I would probably find entertaining to watch/ do myself. There's no satisfaction to be had in cheating your way to victory as far as I can see, because you haven't actually outplayed anyone else, so the only fun in it must be gained from eliciting responses from the people you're playing against.

This^^
It's really really funny when you're doing it :D

It's like in the first CoD, spawning in S&D before they patched in punkbuster I used to love just throwing a grenade on the floor and killing everyone on my team. I can't remember how many servers I was banned on, but each and every time was 100% worth it :D
