Why do people pointlessly overtake?

I pointlessly overtake if the person if front is driving in a stupid way, I dont mean going slowly necessarily I mean braking all the time for no reason like when they come to corners or a lorry comes the other way... another thing that annoys me is the inability for people to maintain a constant speed.

yup its just not nice to drive behind some people, i will overtake some people just to make my driving easier even if i dont get there any faster.

The thing that annoys me most about overtaking is when you have been stuck behind some slow moving vehicle for a while with no chance to overtake. Then when a couple of other cars join behind you and a short while later you get to a safe bit of road it is somehow their "right" to overtake first starting from the back. Just because they joined two apparent slow moving vehicles doesn't mean the car behind the car infront (me) hasn't also been waiting for miles for a safe place to pass, selfish get. When I find myself joining a queue of traffic and get to the safe bit of road I'll always at least give the guy in front a chance to overtake first. If it looks as though he is just as bad then fair enough.

I overtake when I want to drive more quickly than the person in front, or when they are driving a stinking diesel or are blocking my view of the road (van, 4x4 etc.). Sometimes I might be in a hurry to get somewhere, but usually it's just because I would prefer to either be driving faster or be in front. Providing the overtake is safe, I don't understand why people get so worked up about being overtaken...easily damaged ego's perhaps?

This is pretty much it for me too. Whenever I'm following something I'm having my pace dictated by them pulling away from junctions slowly, dithering when traffic lights change, braking excessively for gentle bends in the road etc.

whats so wrong with being overtaken in this country?

So what, some people want to go faster than you.... just let them get on with it.

I hate this. Some twerp in a Yaris Sport tried it on me a while back. It's like... wait your turn biatch!

People who usually moan about "dangerous overtakes" I always imagine are the same muppets who deliberately speed up when you're in the middle of the overtake. "Yeah mate, the only dangerous thing about my overtake was your dangerous behaviour".

Blue lights and sirens for the ultimate o/t though.

Best overtake I ever saw was an unmarked police without lights or sirens. I assume (it was three-up) that it was driver training - there's a fair bit of it on the roads around here. He overtook the whole of a queue of twelve vehicles in two moves. No fuss, no drama; just two perfectly executed manoeuvres.

I sometimes overtake purely because I like the sensation of acceleration and I like the sound the engine makes when I boot it. That's all the reason I need ...but I would only do this if safe to do so.

If my 55 bhp 106 can overtake something they are definitely going too slow!
I still get full beam treatment and two finger salutes occasionally. NO idea what their problem is. Bunch of brain dead halfwits.
I hate commuter traffic as well, it seems full of people that haven't fully woken up.
Braking for roundabouts with green traffic lights on, or just braking when there is nothing to brake for..
People turning off at junctions with no indicators when you are waiting to pull out, people braking for unknown reasons when there is nothing in front of them but a kink in the road.
Drives me bat **** insane if truth be told

Me too, that and I don't like being held up unnecessarily.

Can't say I've ever been given abuse for overtaking though. That said, around here it's mostly OAPs who probably didn't even notice anyway ;)

A minute or so later a blue 306 diesel catches me up who was clearly doing more like 70-80 than 60. He weaves a few times and eventually forces his way past me and swerves in front of me to avoid oncoming lorry . Then sits in front of me for the rest of the journey, looking for a way past the car infront.

If you're not going to overtake the car in front yourself, why did you not make space so that the person behind can overtake if they choose to do so?

Yes if on the rare occaison I am just cruising along slowly I will leave a considerable gap in front of me, normally that of a bus/truck length so if anyone did one to weave in and out and progress on they can do so safely.

There is nothing more annoying then those who say all close up behind a truck or tractor on a country road and have no intention of passing, meaning I have to overtake 8-12 cars in a row to clear them all.

The other time I keep well over is for bikers, if I spot a biker I give them plenty of room to pass me safely. I think the drivers who purposely hover in the middle of the road are absolute idiots and if I was the biker they were doing that too on my way past I'd be putting my boot in the idiots door. Then there is those who don't use their mirrors, a mate of mine has now been knocked of her bike 3 times now, thankfully never seriously hurt but using mirrors would not hurt.

When I used to commute to Manchester from Stoke daily which involved country roads and dual carriage-ways it was amazing the amount of selfish idiots you'd come across, I guess I can be impatient but when coming off a roundabout why do so many insist on coming off in the fast lane when slow lane is empty and then proceed to sit their at 50mph? Maybe it was bad of me but if I was behind and after a short while they still had not moved I'd either undertake, flash my lights for them to move over or just drive on their bumper. I just get the feeling some people see a half decent car behind them and get some kind of pleasure at trying to hold them up.....
All it does is just make me more determined to get past, drive dangerously and take risk to get past the idiot. Or eventually they move over, you pass and they give you the headlights, which never goes down well with me, it normally ends in my slamming my brakes on in front of them, stupid I know, but its amazing how we all turn into barbariens once behind a wheel. :D

People who stop at roundabouts that are clear I just don't get, I just put it down to them been dumb. I am always looking ahead up the road, but so many people only seem to focus on the car in front. I will approach a roundabout and not even slow down as I've already looked and confirmed all clear, wheras so many seem to stop and then check for the all clear.

Could not agree more.

If I'm at the front I've taking to doing the police trick: drive with my wheels over the white lines so that people behind me know what I plan to do. If something comes the other way then I drop back in, then pull over again once they are past. If I'm waiting to see of the road is clear, but pretty sure it is, then sometimes I put the car almost onto the other side of the road until I know for certain that it's clear.

But...

My car is pretty powerful, so there's not likely to be anything behind me that can overtake faster. If you drive a 1.6 Focus and play this game then you aren't going to make many friends, as you'll prevent faster cars overtaking, when you can't but they can.

I know a few lads on traffic and ARVs and they perform overtakes I wouldn't have the nuts to contemplate yet they are done safely.
