Why do you drink?

Starfighter has made a horrendous job of putting his point across but I know what he's getting at.

Drinking is something the human race have done pretty much since we found out about it. It's pretty standard.

A lot - not all - but a lot of people who don't drink are also dull people. And I mean dull when they're sober, and you're sober too.

Of course that's not the rule, but there are a lot of them around.

People who are too afeared to just cut loose and let the monkey out. On the other side of that one of the most hilarious people I know to be on a night out with drinks coke all night, so absolutely it's not the rule. But I do see what he's getting at.

I would say at least half of people who don't drink, don't drink because they're no fun. It's not that they're no fun because they don't drink.

I used to drink loads and loads from 10am until bed some days, I made a mess of every BBQ and family get together because I was drunk.

I needed to drink to get over what the drugs I'd taken in the years before had done to me bad anxiety and depression.

If I drink now I go on a bender and don't stop until I'm ill, I'm what you'd all call an alcoholic.

Now I drink water and tea and coffee and try to behave and thank god I have my wife and kids for support.

The roads long and I've failed a few times but I keep on keeping on.

well done mate!
keep up the good work

Some of the most boring people I have met have been drunk...even when I was drinking myself.

People who are too afeared to just cut loose and let the monkey out.

Or people who are to scared to face a social situation sober?

Not sure what your latter point means tbh...?

I'm saying that he's put his point across horrendously but I *think* what he's trying to get across is that drinking is clearly enjoyable. It's obvious, otherwise everyone wouldn't do it. And I mean everyone. I'm pretty sure there are cultures, plenty of them, that perfected making stuff to get ****ed up on before they mastered language.

There a lot of people around who either are too scared to get drunk and let the monkey out, or consider themselves above doing the above.

Most of those people are dull people.

Of course there are tons of people who just don't see the appeal, or never got used to the taste, or whatever, but a substantial number of non-drinkers are either boring boring people, or ex-drinkers who got themselves in one too many pickles while... pickled.

Or people who are to scared to face a social situation sober?

Of course there are those people, who are too dull or stupid or anxious to be around people in a social environment, while sober. They can't do it. Those are as bad as people who are too scared to get drunk because they're scared of what might happen.

I will go out and drink, but I can just as easily go out and not drink.

Fact is, getting drunk IS fun. It WILL, on a good night, lead to inane but hilarious things happening. Getting drunk is not inherently bad.

People who NEVER drink and people who ALWAYS drink are just as bad as each other. Eschewing drinking entirely, without good reason, is silly in my eyes, it has its merits.

I suppose what I'm saying is that people who have the idea that people who like to get drunk are in some way flawed are barking up the wrong tree - as are people who think that people who don't get drunk are flawed in some fashion.

I drink because it loosens the tounge and usually leads to mischief of which my sober mind would reject due to sensibility constraints.

However, I do try not to pass the point of 'fun' drunk into 'mess' drunk, but it does happen every now and again. Usually when I start earlier than usual or have had no dinner (as I get drunk faster and get more excited about drinking and therefore have more time to do it, not due to the old wives tale of no dinner blah blah blah).

Some of my best bonding moments have been with people when I've had a few and will happily talk openly about things I wouldn't usually. However I do dislike some of my mates when they go too far, endless talking of nonsence and continual shouting in my ear are my main gripes.

Some people don't find it enjoyable...so they don't drink..this does not make people weird.

a lot of people are too scared to approach women sober...so they hide behind the veneer of drink...poor ickle people...
:p

Thats a massive generalisation really don't you think?

I have met many non drinkers and quite frankly they are some of the most interesting people I have met...They travel, do sport, get laid, do photography etc... As they are to busy living life and spending their money on stuff that enhances their experiences not just sat in the pub on a fri/sat night talking the same old **** to the same people.

Why didn't you drink?

There must have been a reason for choosing not to drink for such a long time?

Thinking onself is not normal for not drinking is completely different to thinking others are not normal for not drinking.

I didn't like the taste of any alcohol I tried when I was younger so I never bothered.
All over the years friends would pass me a drink to taste and it would be like tasting wee.
At 40 I was taken to a Real Ale pub where I could taste the difference and found drinks I could have now and then.
I now exclusively drink Newcastle Brown but only one an evening.

I'm not saying drinking is bad...I drink myself and too often really...But what I am saying is you don't become boring or dull if you don't.

One is certainly not odd for not drinking.

Sometimes I get bored of drinking..I become apathetic about life and just plod on.Some of the most exciting times in my life have been without drink.I was focused, had more money and did more things to occupy myself.

Not drinking can sometimes set you free in all honesty...

Drinking one newcastle brown ale is not drinking!

And why did not drinking make your feel weird?

Of course it is and I could easily be over the drink drive limit on it.
How many bottles of beer do you have to drink before you are drinking?

And why did not drinking make your feel weird?

I go to at least 3 pubs a week and being the only person in the pub not drinking does put me in the weird category.

.

I'm sorry but one bottle of beer is not what we are talking about here.

People don't go out and have one bottle of beer...They have several to loosen up. This is what this thread is about?

Why do you drink just one bottle of newcastle brown? For the taste?

have you ever been drunk?

I go to at least 3 pubs a week and being the only person in the pub not drinking does put me in the weird category.

Does it though?

Why does it put you in the weird category?

Millions of people go to pubs and don't drink every single day of the week. This is fact.
